The Department
The Position
The City of Torrance is seeking a self-motivated, detailed oriented professional to perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of mobile and stationary radios, public safety lights and sirens, voice intercoms and recording systems, and other electronic communications equipment. The Wireless Technician works closely with vendors, contractors and other departments to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner and maintains records and files of repair work and inventory. In addition, Wireless Technicians have the opportunity to participate in the design and fabrication of special electronic apparatuses.

NOTE: There is a 5% premium for possession of a FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License.
Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Graduation from high school or equivalent is required and four years of experience installing, maintaining and repairing radio and electronic communications equipment is required. Completion of trade or technical school is desirable.
License and/or Certificates
An appropriate valid California driver's license; possession of a Federal Communications Commission license is desirable. Possession of a NABER or similar certification is also desirable.
Ideal Candidate
Successful candidates will possess the following:
- Strong ability to efficiently install, maintain, and repair radio and electronic communication equipment with precision and accuracy;
- In-depth knowledge of programming and reprogramming Motorola radio devices and systems to meet specific operational and user needs;
- Expertise in diagnosing and troubleshooting faults in radio communication systems, addressing both hardware and software issues to minimize downtime;
- Ability to locate and identify interruptions and interferences;
- Proficiency in interpreting and preparing technical blueprints and schematics for system installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting;
- Advanced computer skills, with the ability to install, optimize, and manage communication systems while handling service requests effectively;
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with supervisors and colleagues in a collaborative environment;
- Ability to work well with cross-functional teams to prioritize and coordinate equipment repairs and installations;
- Creativity and resourcefulness in approaching technically challenging repairs or installations with innovative solutions;
- Solid understanding and practical knowledge of voice intercom systems, ensuring smooth integration with broader communication technologies;
- Expertise in collaborating with manufacturers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to resolve technical issues and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
