GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This is semi-skilled work involving the installation, cleaning, maintenance, repair, and monitoring of the city’s sanitary sewer collection system. May at times be required to perform cleaning operations of the city storm sewer system. Maintains proper and accurate records. Ensures that all assigned equipment is functional and in a safe operating condition. Maintains effective working relationships with public, sub-contractors and other city departments. Ensures that safety practices are always adhered to.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the operation, installation, cleaning, maintenance, and repair of the sanitary sewer collection system.
- Performs routine maintenance tasks such as but not limited to line flushing, bucketing, root cutting, televising and chemical treatment.
- Assists foreman in the development of preventive maintenance schedules for all assigned equipment and infrastructure.
- Assist in resolving blockages and backups, may investigates system odor complaints, assist in the performance of dye tests of building connections.
- Assist in performing point repairs as directed.
- Assists foreman in estimating materials and equipment needs.
- Keeps work time and assignment records.
- Operates equipment necessary for completion of assigned tasks.
- Performs other work as assigned or as needed to ensure the most efficient operation of city sanitary sewer system.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge and understanding of materials, methods, and techniques commonly used in the installation, cleaning, maintenance, and repair of sanitary sewer collection systems. Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and hazards associated with collection system work. Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in automotive operations during street work. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to utilize computers to track systems histories. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the public. Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous labor-intensive assignments under varying work conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational training school or GED. Nine (9) Continuing Education Units in the field of wastewater treatment. Not less than two (2) years of experience as a truck driver or operator of construction or maintenance equipment. Experience in the operation and maintenance of sanitary sewer collection systems is desirable. Must possess and maintain a NEWEA or equivalent State Certification as a Collection System Operator Grade II or higher within twenty-four (24) months. A valid State of Connecticut Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B with airbrakes and Tanker endorsements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, handle small items with fingers, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear, ability to define colors. The employee is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Be able to physically complete task of entering confined space entry such as in manholes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and caustic chemicals. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions and vibration. Routinely required to perform work in streets with exposure to vehicular traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
