What are the responsibilities and job description for the Employed Police Recruit position at City of Traverse City?
An Employed Police Recruit is a law enforcement officer candidate who is employed by a recognized law enforcement agency and who is enrolled in an approved basic law enforcement training academy for the purpose of training in order to become eligible to be licensed as a law enforcement officer employed by the law enforcement agency. Successful Employed Police Recruits will pass all MCOLES testing requirements, departmental background, psychological and medical testing. The Employed Police Recruit is a police academy student assigned as a temporary employee within the Police Department intended to result in reclassification to Patrol Officer. The Employed Police Recruit reports to the Patrol Services Division Lieutenant or their designee. This position is expected to support the mission of the Traverse City Police Department. The starting hourly rate is $27.19 per hour.

Knowledge and Skills:
- Principles and techniques of public relations and customer service

Minimum Qualifications:
- Be a citizen of the United States.
- Have attained the minimum age as established by the employing agency, which shall not be less than 18 years of age or as otherwise provided by law.
- Have earned a high school diploma or have attained a passing score on the general education development test indicating a high school graduation level. Attainment of an associate or baccalaureate degree shall be evidence of having met this standard.
- Have no prior felony convictions, or felony expungements and set asides.
- Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license from 1 of the 50 states, the district of Columbia, a possession or territory of the United States, or Canada. Michigan driving privileges shall not be in a state of suspension, revocation, or denial at the time of entry into an academy or activation as a law enforcement officer.
Upon successfully completing the police academy and becoming qualified for licensing with MCOLES, you are eligible to become a Patrol Officer. The Patrol Officer position is a full-time union position with a starting wage of $28.18 per hour.
· Effective July 1, 2025: $29.59 - $35.14 an hour depending on step.
· Effective July 1, 2026: $30.77 - $36.55 an hour depending on step.
