Park Rangers work Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, evenings and weekends, specifically on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Typical hours are 12:30pm - 9:00pm (subject to change for special events) five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday or Friday through Tuesday.


Our Park Rangers will perform a wide variety of tasks essential to park operations. The primary role of this position is to provide excellent customer service to the public, assist park guests, and educate the users on park rules to help provide a safe and welcoming experience for all visitors.

Assists park users with directions, questions, and general park information.
 
Monitors City property on foot, by vehicle, or bicycle.

Provides information and education to park users regarding park rules and regulations and park use etiquette.

Checks in with users of park fields and facilities during scheduled uses; answers questions, provides support, and ensures use follows rental guidelines.
  
Reports violations of laws and ordinances, unauthorized practices, safety and health hazards, and unsanitary conditions to designated authority. 
 
Directs traffic and enforces parking and traffic regulations on City properties.
 
Sets up and locates barriers, flares, flags and other appropriate warnings to protect the public from emergency hazards.
 
Renders first aid and summons medical assistance when necessary.
 
Assists recreation program staff, park maintenance staff, and special use permit holders with setting up or breaking down facilities for programs and performing minor maintenance tasks.
 
Prepares daily reports and completes studies as may be required.
 
Provides general information about the City to the public.
 
Drives to city facilities, vendors, training programs, and meetings as necessary.

Technical Skill/Knowledge: Knowledge of department policies, rules, and regulations. Knowledge of agency objectives, available facilities and services and interesting features and places of interest.
 
Language Skills: Ability to record major situations clearly and accurately. Ability to inform the public effectively and to enforce laws, ordinances, regulations and safety rules with firmness, tact, and impartiality. Ability to communicate effectively with people on an individual or group basis. Bilingual (Spanish) fluency is preferred. 
 
Reasoning Ability: Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and the ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies while recognizing the rights and privileges of individuals and groups that patronize the agency's facilities. Work involves an element of personal risk and the employee must be able to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations. Ability to determine the proper course of action during major situations. Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions. 
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possession of or the ability to obtain possession of a valid Oregon Driver's license. Ability to obtain Community CPR and Basic First Aid certification.
 
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, local businesses and the general public. 
 
Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be free of conviction of a crime other than minor traffic violations.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Two years of academic study above the high school level preferred; or two years of progressively responsible experience with demonstrated ability to learn and apply detailed regulations and procedures. Any satisfactory equivalent combinations of experience and training which ensures the ability to perform the work may substitute for the above.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; grasp; reach forward with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; squat, crouch; kneel; stoop, bend; twist; reach overhead; and pinch. The employee will rarely sit; balance; use stairs and walk over uneven surfaces; finger and foot manipulation. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. The employee must occasionally push and pull 20 pounds in loaded carts and/or wagons.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
