ABOUT THIS JOB
Position Specific Summary
The Construction Maintenance Worker position at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility is responsible for maintaining and repairing irrigation systems installed along roadsides, medians, and transportation corridors to support landscaping that enhances visibility and safety. This position ensures the safety identification and protection of underground utilities during construction projects.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Street Maintenance Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Drives to various locations to performs maintenance and repairs on irrigation systems in roadside, median, and transportation corridor landscapes. Inspects irrigation systems, components, pipes, pumps, valves and sprinklers for leaks blockages and wear and tear. Monitors water flow, ensuring that the water flow is consistent and meets the requirements of the area being irrigated. Checks pressure levels and monitors water pressure to ensure it is within the required range for optimal irrigation.
- Repairs broken pipes, valves, sprinkler heads or any other parts of the irrigation system that are malfunctioning or damaged. Replaces damaged or outdated parts, such as sprinklers, nozzles and timers. Clears debris and sediment that may clog pipes, valves or sprinkler heads ensuring smooth water flow. Maintains and repairs irrigation pumps, ensuring they function effectively and efficiently.
- Utilizes specialized tools and equipment to locate and mark locations of unground utilities before excavation or construction work begins. Marks the ground with color-coded paint to identify different types of utilities, ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards.
- Assists in the installation of new irrigation systems, particularly within median islands and other landscaped areas. Provides support setting up new pumps, pipes, sprinkler heads and other irrigation equipment as per design plans and specifications. Installs and configures automatic irrigation timers and controllers to ensure systems operate on schedule.
- Diagnoses and resolves issues such as low water pressure, uneven water distribution, and system failures and performs necessary repairs. Addresses issues to overwatering and underwatering by adjusting sprinkler heads, nozzle types and system settings. Responds to emergences such as sudden system failures, broken pipes or damage pumps to minimize water wastage.
- Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
Indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.
Individuals in this position may be required to work on-call shifts to include nights and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience
Two (2) years of directly related experience
Equivalency
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
License/Certifications
Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License - Arizona Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division
