Position Specific Summary
The Instrumentation and Control Technician position at the City of Tucson’s Water Department is responsible for installing, maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting and repairing electronic, mechanical and pneumatic instruments, including control systems used to monitor and regulate processes within the water distribution and production system. This position maintains communications for various remote sites throughout Tucson and validates systems to ensure proper operation, accurate control and reliable data collection.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Electronics Technician Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Travels to various city locations to maintain instrumentation and control devices, including flow meters, pressure transducers, level sensors, water quality monitors, chemical analyzers and remote communications systems. Performs routine maintenance and preventative checks on existing equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Drives to various water facilities to calibrate instruments to ensure accuratereading. Conducts functional tests on PLC control systems, water quality sensors and telemetry data, documenting all results within maintenance management systems to maintain compliance and operational standards.
Diagnoses malfunctions in instrumentation, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) control systems, Ladder Logic software and radio communications at various water sites. Identifies faulty components and performs necessary repairs, replacements or software updates to restore functionality and minimize downtime.
Interacts with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to monitor water distribution and production operations. Analyzes system data to identify potential issues, ensure data accuracy and verify control parameters to optimize performance. Utilizes data insights to diagnose problems and improve operational efficiency.
Maintains detailed records of maintenance activities, calibrations, repairs and system performance. Ensures adherence to safety protocols and regulations related to the handling of chemicals, electrical systems and work in confined spaces within water treatment facilities.
Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
This position is a primary driver and will be expected to operate a city vehicle. Must have open availability. This position requires work in various climate and working conditions and includes indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.
This position also requires weekend, evening, and on-call hours as well as travel to all Tucson Water sites, some of which are in remote locations and requires the ability to work in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following :
1. Experience in Electrical Systems or Equipment Repair and Service.
2. Electronic or Instrumentation training from a recognized trade or technical school, or equivalent military training.
3. Experience in maintaining, repairing, troubleshooting instrumentation and control systems.
4. Three (3) or more years of experience working with instrumentation and controls.
5. Experience in programming and configuring PLCs and software for Human-Machine Interface (HMI) / PLC systems.
6. Hands-on experience with pressure transmitters, flow meters, analytical instrumentation, level transmitters, and Fluke process meters.
7. Experience interpreting wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, and P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) drawings.

The written examination is a highly technical exam. Applicants must have a solid understanding of electrical theory, Ladder Logic, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and communication equipment. You must be present to test as we will not offer additional test sessions - rescheduling is not an option.
