SUMMARY

The Lifeguard is responsible for performing lifeguarding tasks and enforcing safety rules at a municipal swimming facility. Tasks are of routine difficulty and include participation in maintaining an assigned area in a safe condition. The exercise of some initiative and independent judgement is required when responding to emergency situations which might arise. These employees work under general supervision, ensuring that proper observation techniques and the safety of patrons in swimming areas are always maintained. Employees might be required to work irregular hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Work is reviewed through observation, periodic workshops and results obtained.

EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITY

· Patrols entire pool area and locker rooms, maintaining a constant watch for potential accidents in the water, on diving boards, pool decks, and surrounding areas.

· Enforces policies, rules, and regulations governing conduct of the pool patrons; assists higher level aquatics(s) leader at a pool facility; participates in the enforcement of swimming pool rules and regulations.

· Participates in the maintenance of areas, equipment and supplies; when assigned to a pool performs such pool maintenance as brushing, vacuuming; informs supervisor of need to restock supplies to maintain correct supply levels.

· Performs special assignments such as assisting with swim meets and other aquatics activities.

· Completes attendance reports, daily reports, accident reports, and special activity sheets as required.

· Performs all lifeguard duties when needed; administers first aid and performs lifesaving activities; responds to emergencies.

· Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Working knowledge of lifesaving principles and practices; water safety techniques and the use of lifesaving equipment; first aid procedures.

· Some knowledge of pool rules and regulations.

· Ability to: perform lifeguard skills as required, enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; prevent hazardous situations from developing; react quickly, calmly and rationally in emergencies; maintain records and compile reports when needed; communicate and interact effectively with the general public; perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance.

· Skills in the operation and maintenance of lifesaving equipment; lifesaving procedures.

JOB HAZARDS

Employees may experience the following: exposure to harmful UV rays from long days in the sun, exposure to toxic chemicals, such as chlorine, disinfectants, and other chemicals used to enhance water clarity, biohazards, such as urine, vomit, feces, blood, fungi, bacteria, and viruses that can pollute swimming pools and fresh or saltwater areas, slip and fall hazards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 16 years of age and possess current Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certifications or pass a scheduled certification course.

CERTIFICATIONS

In possession of or will earn a Certified Lifeguard Certification. “Certified lifeguard” means an individual who has a valid and current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate (or current Red Cross equivalent), or the YMCA Senior Life Saving Certificate, or the Boy Scouts of America equivalent.

EXAMINATION

· No Certification: At the completion of scheduled Lifeguard Certification Course, a test is administered.

· In possession of Lifeguard Certification: Evaluation of education and experience.

· Background check required if the applicant is 18 years or older.

· Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

ADA REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements - Physical demand requirements are at levels for those of active work. Tasks involves the performance of physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, stooping and reaching above shoulder, lifting or carrying weights of twenty to fifty pounds and occasionally very heavy items of one hundred pounds or over. Tasks require that work be performed in chlorinated water and may involve extended periods of sitting in a lifeguard stand.

Sensory Requirements - Tasks require visual perception and discrimination including color and depth. Tasks require perception and discrimination of odor and sound.

Pay: $13.50 per hour

Expected hours: 5 – 20 per week
