The Recreation Aide I / II is responsible for assisting in the implementation of the Teen Camp program and will be located at Peter G. Elementary School in Tumwater. The Teen Camp program takes place Monday through Thursday and will go on field trips to local destinations each day. This position will work 32 hours per week from approximately June 23 to August 14, with the exception of 40 hours at a 4 day, 3 night overnight camp from July 22 – 25. There will also be additional hours for program planning/setup, and staff training June 18 - 20. Other opportunities may include assisting with gym monitoring, sport leagues, special events and TYP.
Supervision Supervision is received through regular contact from the Recreation Aide II, Supervisor or Coordinator. The Recreation Program Aide I has discretion to lead by monitoring and enforcing department procedures and ensuring safe participation in all recreational settings.Distinguishing Characteristics This is an entry-level position designed to conduct leadership qualities in all recreation activities at various Tumwater School District locations and City facilities. The Recreation Aide I will provide stimulating activities in a safe, positive, fun and challenging environment for teens ages 12-17 years old. This position will transport teen participants daily in a 15 passenger van to local destinations to engage in fun and enriching activities.
Working Conditions Outside work may be required in all types of weather. Work requires occasional long periods of standing or walking. Transporting participants may involve up to 1 hour of driving at a time. Frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds. Work frequently takes place in noisy, active settings which demand concentration despite numerous interruptions and distractions.Qualifications Minimum of 18 years or age and have a high school diploma or GED. One year previous experience in assisting with planning, programming and supervising recreational and/or educational activities for teens ages 12-17 in a school, camp or recreational setting, or any combination of education and experiences which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job. Knowledge of various sports, games, arts and crafts, and cooperative group activities.
Abilities Ability to establish and maintain effective cooperative working relationships with the public and staff; to work independently while remaining part of the larger team; to respond to questions and complaints in a courteous and tactful manner; to accurately follow written and verbal instructions; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to drive safely for as long as 1 hour despite possible distractions from teen participants.
Special Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Washington state driver's license. Must be able to work varying schedules to include evening and weekend assignments.
