Summary

The purpose of this classification is to supervise and perform highly skilled and technical fiber optic communications, networking, and electronics tasks. Plans, inspects, installs, maintains, operates and repairs field components including CCTV cameras, WiFi Access Points, fiber optic splices, fiber optic terminations, fiber optic electronics including video, data, and voice communications hardware / software, and fiber optic test equipment.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this classification. Performs highly skilled, technical fiber optic communications, and electronics,.

Plans, inspects, installs, maintains, operates and repairs field components including CCTV cameras, WiFi access points, fiber optic splices, fiber optic terminations, fiber optic electronics including video, data, and voice communications hardware / software and fiber optic test equipment.

Performs various tasks to maintain the fiber network; conducts fiber network testing; restores fiber networks; designs fiber optic networks; tracks fiber locations with software programs; installs fiber modems.

Assembles and installs closed circuit TV cameras and WiFi access points; monitors CCTV network using graphic user software. Understands and complies with Federal and State standards and specifications regarding installation and termination of coaxial and networking cable.

Monitors and changes back-up data tapes for TDOT systems.

Operates and utilizes a variety of equipment and tools including a fusion splicer, OTDR, optical voice communicator, fiber locator, visible fault ID, light source, laser source, optical power meter, fiber optic loss test set, network line SIM, inspection scope, and related equipment; utilizes various software programs including word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, database, and related department programs; maintains all equipment used in the performance of duties in a safe and responsible manner.

Recommends policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of quality services by the department.

Incorporates continuous quality improvement principles in day to day activities.

Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.

Must meet regular attendance requirements.

Must be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers and citizens.

Interacts with departmental visitors, conducts tours, and provides explanations regarding system operations.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or GED with vocational or technical school training in electronics, fiber optic systems, and traffic systems, or closely related field with one to five years of experience as a technician working with fiber optic cable, CCTV, electronics, and communication networks; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) within twelve months of employment. This job classification is considered to be safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.

VERBAL APTITUDE : Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and / or design data and information.

MATHEMATICAL APTITUDE : Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, and ratios; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.

FUNCTIONAL REASONING : Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

SITUATIONAL REASONING : Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

PHYSICAL ABILITY : Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS : Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright / dim lights, toxic agents, animal / wildlife attacks, animal / human bites, or rude / irate customers.
