POSITION SUMMARY:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes participant safety and engagement in accordance with City policies and procedures. Takes life-saving action when needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with City policies, procedures, and in accordance with training.
- Completes related reports as required.
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with the participants and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions.
- Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean swimming pool environment.
- Attends staff meetings and required in-service training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

- Minimum age of 15
- Must possess and maintain current, valid Lifeguard Certification, CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid. W.S.I. preferred.
- Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with City standards.
- Good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers and the public. Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions. Builds rapport and relates well to others.
- Makes sound judgments and transfers learning from one situation to another.
- Reliable and punctual in-person attendance.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to others.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Must remain alert with no lapses of attention.
- Meet minimum strength and lifting requirements.
- Ability to perform water rescue if necessary.
- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high places and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
