What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water/Wastewater Service Worker position at City of Universal City?
The Water/Wastewater Service Worker performs manual tasks involved in the maintenance of the city’s water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection system. This includes repair or replacement of water service lines and distribution mains, repair or replacement and maintenance of sanitary sewer mains. The Service Worker will also perform maintenance on wastewater lift stations and water well plants, repair customer yards after repairs of water service/main breaks in the right of way. Equipment utilized includes, but is not limited to, trucks, water pumps, sewer camera trailer, jack hammer, backhoe, dump truck, and sewer truck. Directly responsible for the safety of self and indirectly responsible for the safety of co-workers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
· Operate water system to include all wells, elevated and ground storage tanks, standpipes, pumps and water treatment equipment; install and maintain water mains, hydrants, water meters and lateral lines;
· Routinely visit the water plants and tanks to ascertain operational status; determine adequacy and accuracy of recording instruments and adjust as necessary; Make draw down measurements required for water level determination and make gauge reading calculations for required data;
· Inspect all electrical, plumbing and treatment equipment such as electric motors, circuit breakers, control boards, pump valves, flow meters, gauges, chlorinators and all emergency standby facilities. Make necessary adjustments by regulating valves or placing additional motors into operation to increase or decrease any function of the operation to ensure proper water flow and pressure to meet consumption demands and that the application of chemical treatment is maintained at the proper ratio. Make chemical tests of the water for chlorine. Replace chlorine cylinders, renew supply of chemicals to treatment apparatus and adjust as required. Check equipment periodically to prevent overheating or other damage to machinery and to eliminate any potential health, safety or fire hazards. Ensure continuous source of water for the distribution system and redistribute methods to meet emergency conditions. Compute chemical requirements for sterilization of wells and equipment to eliminate harmful bacteria in the water system. Flush stagnant parts of water system as necessary;
· Repairs, constructs and maintains the city’s water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection system;
· Maintains water production and water storage facilities;
· Maintains sanitary sewer lift station;
· Stocks truck with necessary equipment and materials;
· Excavates and backfills trenches in order to complete repairs;
· Cleans, organizes and maintains facilities, tools and equipment;
· Assists with the set up of work zone for traffic control and promotes and practices a safe working environment;
· Repair customer yards and city streets after water/sewer repairs in the right of way;
· Maintains water/wastewater plants by mowing and trimming various sites;
· Perform weekly equipment maintenance checks;
· Perform the duties of Utilities Service Tech when requested or in their absence;
· Required to respond to all emergency water system requirements on a 24-hour basis;
· Rotate 24 hr. standby duties with fellow co-workers for the water/wastewater division;
· Performs other necessary duties and fulfills responsibilities as required by the Water/Wastewater Superintendent and the Director of Public Works.

Required Education and/or Experience
· High School Diploma or GED.
· Experience in water production and sanitary sewer collection beneficial but not necessary.
· Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Familiarity with methods, equipment, materials and standard practices used in the construction, maintenance and repair of water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection system.
· Knowledge about the operation of all the equipment commonly used in the maintenance and operation of the water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection system.
· Ability to pass exams and obtain licenses as required.
· Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
· Ability to work overtime on demand when required.
· Ability to cover 24 hour, 7 days per week rotating standby duty.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
· Must have a valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
· Minimum “D” TNRCC license in Water and Wastewater Collection required within one year of employment.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time benefits eligible position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but this position’s work schedule is subject to change depending on the needs of the department and the City. Evening and weekend work are also required as needed. Overtime is required upon demand. Must be available for rotating 24 hour, 7 days per week standby duty.
Travel
An employee in this position is required to drive a vehicle to various meetings, functions, and events; is required to travel out of town to represent the City at meetings and conferences and for training.
