JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
As part of the Community Development team, reporting to the Chief Building Official, this position reviews residential plans submitted for compliance with all applicable building codes and ordinances; performs on-site inspections of residential and commercial construction projects for compliance with all applicable building/mechanical codes and all other applicable ordinances and laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: For purposes of 42 USC 12101:
- Provides exceptional customer service to all city residents, businesses, and contractors for development review, building permit and building plan review processes, utilizing a deep knowledge and understanding construction techniques and applicable codes and regulations; provides information to the general public and contractors on building codes and interpretations of such codes, general construction problems, and other building code related issues; receives and responds to complaints or inquiries from citizens, attorneys, government officials, business entities, Upper Arlington Schools, and others.
- Conducts inspections of commercial and residential construction projects in order to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances (e.g., inspects phases of construction, equipment, materials, methods, and construction workmanship, identifies code violations, recommends corrective measures for compliance with code, issues correction notices, approves buildings for occupancy etc.).; issues correction notices and citations for code violations; attends court hearings for code violators and prepares case materials as necessary.
- Reviews residential construction plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances; issues correction notices when plans are disapproved and issues plan approval letters and recommends permit approval when plans are approved.
- Utilizing appropriate software, maintains records of plan review and building inspection services in accordance with established procedures; prepares reports and corrections notices.
- Performs structural reviews of buildings after fires, storms, lightning strikes etc.; performs pre-burn inspections of building prior to fire department training exercises.
- Maintains licenses and certifications as required.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
- Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate’s Degree or equivalent from an accredited two-year college or technical school; or high school diploma or GED, plus three to four years of progressively responsible related construction superintendent experience with commercial buildings or building inspection experience with a State of Ohio Certified Building Department; or any combination of training, education, or experience which provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- State of Ohio Building Inspector Certification, Interim approval or Trainee required; if not already attained, Certification will be required for successful candidate once hired
- State of Ohio Residential Building Official Certification, Interim approval or Trainee required; if not already attained, Certification will be required for successful candidate once hired
- State of Ohio Building Official Certification preferred
- International Code Council Building Inspection Certification preferred
- Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License and the ability to maintain insurability under the City’s vehicle insurance policy

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); is exposed to possible injury from unclean or unsanitary conditions; works with moving mechanical parts of equipment of machines; is exposed to extreme weather conditions; is exposed to hazardous driving conditions; is exposed to dangerous fumes; is exposed to possible injury from electric shock; ascends scaffolds/ladders; works in or around crowds; occasionally lifts, pushes, pulls, or carries objects 50 lbs. or less.

Salary : $68,259 - $95,563
