Legal Assistant/Victim Advocate
The City of Urbana, Ohio is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Legal Assistant/Victim Advocate at $20.00 per hour. The Legal Assistant/Victim Advocate performs regular clerical and administrative work; establishes and maintains filing systems, and indexes information by entering case notes; assists attorneys in the preparation of cases for arraignments, pre-trials, motion hearings and trials, including (but not limited to) documents, records, and evidence while verifying factual information; manages high-level, sensitive and confidential reports through various software tools; receives the public and answers questions; responds to inquiries from employees, citizens, attorneys, and Municipal Court staff and refers, when necessary, to appropriate persons. This position also provides assistance to victims of crime after referral by law enforcement in conjunction with pending misdemeanor, felony and traffic cases in Municipal Court including, but not limited to, providing advocacy services to victims either through personal or telephone contact; ensuring victims are aware of their rights as provided by the Constitution of the State of Ohio; providing victims with information regarding the judicial process and court procedures; keeping victims and witnesses informed as to court dates and other case-related information; conveying victim information to the Court, including requests for temporary protection orders and possible damages caused by Defendant; accompanying victims to Court; and providing referrals for services and follow-up support. This position also performs various other related duties as requested. This position reports directly to the Law Director, and is partially grant funded.
The qualifications for this position include the following:
Education and Experience:
¨ High school diploma or GED equivalent, with specialized course work in general office practices preferred.
¨ Minimum of two (2) years of job-related experience (victim advocacy and/or paralegal experience preferred).
¨ Training in compliance with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office required upon hire.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
¨ Possess sensitivity and excellent communication skills in working with crime victims.
¨ Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
¨ Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public; ability to communicate professionally and effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to handle stressful situations.
¨ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the community, specifically law enforcement officers and community organizations.
¨ Ability to multitask.
¨ Proficient in Microsoft Office and basic office equipment operations; working knowledge of office practices and procedures; and ability to learn and operate web-based software.
¨ Attend seminars and workshops related to functional duties and responsibilities.

¨ Background Investigation.
