Summary Description
Join the Urbandale Public Library for a fast-paced, fun-packed summer! The Youth Services Summer Reading Intern plays an integral part in implementing our reading challenge and summer programming for youth. Our highest priorities for summer reading are : 1) To offer high-quality programming with an emphasis on literacy; 2) To present opportunities for family engagement and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) exploration; 3) To foster a lifelong love of reading; 4) To prevent the "summer slide".
The Summer Reading Intern will have the opportunity to gain work experience with youth of all ages during our busy summer season. Opportunities include event implementation and possibly some supervision of teen volunteers. The internship will provide an opportunity to develop practical experience in planning and implementing children's programming and to build leadership and creative problem solving skills.
This internship is anticipated to run June - August. Additionally, the Summer Reading Intern will attend training in late May. The Summer Reading Intern will be expected to work an average of approximately 24 hours per week, primarily in the afternoons and evenings. Successful candidates will be available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, depending on programming needs.
Routine Job Duties / Responsibilities
- As part of the youth programming team, participate in fast-paced schedule of special event preparation, set-up, execution, and clean up for participants ranging from birth - 17 years of age, including independently leading some programs.
Manage scheduling and assist in supervision of teen volunteers.
Perform other tasks as needed.
As summer progresses, opportunities for greater responsibility may occur.

Supplemental Information
The Summer Reading Intern may have to spend long hours standing and walking. Some activities will require stooping, lifting, pushing and pulling (up to 50 lbs.) and the intern may have to spend some time outside for activities.
There is one (1) opening available for the summer 2025 internship. Applicants selected will be invited to participate in the interview process. Interviews will be held the first and second week of March.
Post offer / preemployment background check and drug test are required.
