in the Parks & Recreation Department. Come join the fun!


Aquatic Specialist I/Lifeguards are entry-level positions in which incumbents are responsible for the safety and general welfare of the public at the Walter Graham Aquatic Center and will provide instruction in swimming and a variety of water fitness courses, in addition to lifeguard duties.
 
Typical duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Maintaining order and enforcing established rules and safety procedures; 
  • Scanning designated swim area constantly to ensure patron safety;
  • Making frequent facility checks and maintaining facility cleanliness; 
  • Performing First Aid and CPR techniques, in addition to water rescue and safety procedures; 
  • Instructing and interacting with aquatic program participants of all ages; 
  • Performing facility and equipment set-up, take-down and general housekeeping; 
  • Opening and closing facilities; 
  • Performing reception, cashiering, cash handling and recordkeeping duties as required; and 
  • Attending mandatory in-service trainings.
Aquatic Specialists may work on a year-round basis; a maximum of 129 hours per month. For a complete job description, please click here.

Aquatic Specialist positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits, and do not accrue leave time with the exception of State-mandated sick leave (40 hours per year).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   None required.

Experience:  None required. Six (6) months of experience in an aquatics environment as a competitive swimmer, lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable.

Certification: Must possess and maintain the following American Red Cross certifications:
  • Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer 
  • Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel certification within 12 months of hire
Desirable Certifications:
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalent
  • Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel

Certification requirements are a condition of initial and continued employment.

Must be at least 15 years of age by time of employment.
