The City of Vacaville invites applications for the position of Public Works Manager in our Public Works Department. Currently, two (2) full-time vacancies exist for this position. This recruitment will also establish an eligibility list for future full-time, part-time and limited-term vacancies in this classification that may occur over the next 12-month period.
The Public Works Manager in our Public Works Department leads and oversees critical infrastructure projects and public services. This leadership role involves managing diverse teams, ensuring compliance with local and state regulations and implementing innovative solutions to maintain and improve public works operations. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in project management, budget oversight and fostering a collaborative team environment.
Some duties of the Public Works Manager are as follows:
- Plan, coordinate and oversee public works infrastructure projects and contractors
- Update and proactively manage the Public Works Department's asset management plan and capital replacement forecasting activities
- Supervise teams to ensure efficient operations, safety and compliance with City policies and regulations
- Lead the Maintenance Division’s software and data management improvement initiatives
- Manage budgets, monitor expenditures and recommend cost-effective solutions
- Analyze operations, identify improvements and implement strategies to enhance infrastructure and efficiency
- Represent the Maintenance Division with internal departments, outside commissions and the general public
- Collaborate with internal departments, agencies and stakeholders to address public works needs
SALARY RANGE: Public Works Manager - $115,690.34 - $140,613.14/Annually

Ideal Candidate - The ideal candidate for this position will have a positive attitude, enjoy working in teams and have experience and depth of knowledge on public works maintenance programs, data management and analysis, project management, and the ability to:
- Manage multiple conflicting priorities and work well in a fast-paced environment
- Be flexible and shift gears to assist with unforeseen circumstances
- Analyze data, available resources and stakeholder wants and needs to make recommendations for prioritization of work
- Assess existing processes, research alternatives, make change recommendations and oversee implementation
- Ensure staff has the resources, training and support to provide outstanding customer service to internal and external customers
Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to completion of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public or business administration, construction management, civil engineering, communications, or a related field.
Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible experience in program and/or project management, preferably at a public works agency or similar environment, including at least two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
License and Certificate: Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment is required.
