INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
DEPARTMENT: CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE/MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS
The City of Vacaville Public Relations division is seeking an intern to support community and public engagement. The Public Relations division supports all City departments in messaging the community and can use support across several different areas. Depending upon coursework and experience, the incumbent may assist with drafting social media posts, updating the City’s website, filming live events, broadcasting council meetings, designing graphics, capturing photos of individuals and events and contributing to the creation and distribution of various City communications.
Hours: 20-30 Hours per week.
The City of Vacaville City Attorney’s Office is seeking an intern to support the administrative functions in the office. Duties within this internship may include: Generalized legal assistant support work which may be activities such as processing and assisting with subpoenas and other legal mail, taking phone calls, organization and update of the CAO law library, preparation and update of legal files, scanning and labeling legal materials, photocopying and administrative preparation of materials for filing with court and other clerical duties. Additional activities may include assisting attorneys with review, indexing and/or summarization of legal materials, attending/observing court appearances at Solano County Courthouse, attending City meetings with attorneys to learn about various aspects of City operations and the role of the CAO and assisting attorneys with other duties as identified by the office. The intern will shadow the Legal Services Manager and the attorneys on a variety of activities in an effort to allow the student to be exposed to the duties performed in a municipal law office and to provide mentoring to a student considering a career in the legal field.
Hours: 15-25 hours per week.
The Community Development Department – Planning Division is seeking an intern who is ready to dive into the exciting world of city planning! You'll gain hands-on experience assisting customers at the front counter, learning the ins and outs of permit processing and working on impactful projects that help shape the community. From preparing white papers to presenting to the Planning Commission, you'll develop valuable skills while getting a front-row seat to how cities grow and evolve. No two days are the same—one moment, you’ll be answering questions from residents and the next, you’ll be collaborating on real-world planning initiatives.

DEPARTMENT: POLICE DEPARTMENT/YOUTH SERVICES SECTION
As an intern with the Vacaville Police Department's Youth Services Section, responsibilities will include facilitation of community presentations and youth meetings, managing social media accounts and youth transportation. Other activities include assisting with community events, coordination of programs and program recruitment, clerical responsibilities, customer service/follow-up and other duties as assigned.
Interns within the Police Department will be required to complete a comprehensive background check before an employment offer is given.
Preferred majors: Sociology, Education, or Psychology.
Bilingual (Spanish) speaking is desirable but not required.
Hours: 20 per week. Intern must be available to work evenings and weekends.
The internship duties for Utilities Engineering may include, but are not limited to, assisting with engineering plans, drawings, maps and exhibits including roadways, utilities, landscape and traffic signals using civil engineering design software, assisting in preparation of "as-built" construction plans, performing calculations for cost estimates, material quantities, verification of utility design information, right of way area and other calculations required for plan preparation and/or quality control, performing database and mapping work related to the development and maintenance of the department's GIS, filing and retrieving a variety of engineering maps, plans, reports and related documents, organizing and maintaining the map files, database and other related electronic and paper filing systems, performing specialized data collection activities including installing, calibrating and downloading field equipment such as sewer flow meters and data loggers, utilizing SCADA software and other monitoring tools and equipment to provide engineering data and identify potential problems before they arise, preparing and assisting in the preparation of a variety of technical reports with input from engineering staff, including the development of schedules, spreadsheets, charts and graphics.
Major Requirement: Must be currently enrolled with a major in Civil or Environmental Engineering.

Hours: 15-25 hours per week. Preference for this internship is at least a 12-month availability.
Water Quality Interns will assist Environmental Compliance Inspectors with inspections, sampling, case investigations involving Fat, Oil and Grease and water waste. Assist with CCTV inspections, organizing the storeroom and lab, filing documents, database maintenance and entering data into excel spreadsheets. Preparing outreach materials, distributing them to the public and maintain vehicle cleanliness. Interns should be comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel, GIS and have an overall good computer literacy.
Preferred Majors: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or other science related majors.
Hours: 15-25 hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Enrollment in Associates, Bachelors or Graduate degree program related to area and/or department of internship. For engineering internships, enrollment in an accredited engineering program to obtain a B.S. Degree in Engineering is required.
Experience: No experience required.A completed City of Vacaville Employment Application and Supplemental Questionnaire must be received by the Human Resources Department at 650 Merchant Street, Vacaville, CA 95688 by 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 3, 2025.
