POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary purpose of this position is to inspect work quality and materials inspections for a variety of public works infrastructure projects. Ensures conformance with City standards, specifications and safety standards and to maintain records and prepare reports on projects inspected.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are typical of this position.

· Inspects work quality and materials used in a variety of public works projects for compliance with building and construction standards and codes, ordinances and regulations.

· Previews plans and specifications for assigned project prior to inspection.

· Prepares daily construction progress reports and progress pay estimates.

· Takes samples of materials for examination or analysis by laboratories. Performs routine materials and density field tests to assure material and workmanship quality.

· Observes work during progress and upon completion. Ensures that safety procedures are followed. Coordinates change orders and advises contractors of changes in plans and specifications with assistance from a construction inspector supervisor.

· Coordinates construction inspection activities with other city departments, including gas, telephone, and electrical utilities and related operational areas.

· Performs preliminary and final inspections on routine construction projects. Provides input on acceptance of developments.

· Prepares various inspection reports as required; maintain files and reports regarding inspection and plan check activities and findings.

· Advises and confers with members of the general public concerning problems resulting from projects adjacent to their property or who may be otherwise affected by assigned project.

· Acts as liaison between contractors and the general public with respect to various construction projects.

· Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations.

· Performs other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • 3 years previous experience in public works infrastructure inspection or construction preferred.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license.

Somewhat disagreeable working conditions. Continuously exposed to one or two elements such as noise, intermittent standing, walking; and pushing, carrying, or lifting. Depending on assignment, this position requires touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting. Depending on assignment, this position typically requires walking moderate distances, traversing uneven terrain and hills, exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force consistently, having to move/maneuver around objects.

General Information:

Reports to: Capital Improvement Program Manager

The Public Works Construction Inspector is a full-time FLSA non-exempt position.

Starting salary is $47,840 to $66,560 annually, DOQ.

TMRS Retirement. 7% employee contribution with a 2 to 1 employer match. Vested after five years of service. TMRS provides 1x your annual salary in life insurance benefit. Employees are retirement eligible upon vesting and at least age 60 or with 20 years of service credit at any age as well as restricted prior service credit.
