General Statement of Job
Schedules and conducts fire safety inspections and public education with regard to fire safety.
City Expectations:
Certain essential city services are required to be maintained in any civil emergency. Depending upon the type of emergency, any and all employees may be activated as essential employees in the event of an emergency.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Inspects new and existing buildings to ensure code compliance and enforce laws, ordinances and regulations relating to fire prevention and fire code enforcement.
- Consults contractors, building owners, and homeowner associations concerning fire code requirements.
- Performs site inspections during construction to ensure compliance with fire codes.
- Documents fire code violations; issues notice to the responsible parties and perform follow-up inspections to verify requirements are met.
- Reviews and coordinates construction plans and documents with the Building and Planning departments.
- Responds to public inquiries and complaints regarding fire codes, department operations and policies.
- Responsible for staying current with fire codes and inspections procedures.
- Accurately and legibly prepares records, reports, forms, and other required documentation.
- Makes public education presentations regarding fire safety.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for efficient, safe, and comprehensive responses to fire safety operations. Responsible in work to the Fire Chief or designee.
Minimum Education and Training
High school graduate or equivalent along with advanced-level courses related to fire safety or experience as a Fire Inspector or Fire Fighter. An Associate’s Degree in Fire Science is preferred.
A current Certificate of Compliance as Fire Safety Inspector I from the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal is required and must be maintained. National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector I/II & Plans Examiner I is preferred.
Possess a valid Florida Driver’s license, free of any serious violations or ability to obtain an instate ID within 30 days from date of hire.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Skill Requirements:
Knowledge of Florida Fire Prevention Code, State Uniform Fire Safety Rules and Standards, and Florida Statute 633. Ability to work independently of direct supervision and capable of sustaining regular and predictable attendance. Knowledge of fire inspection techniques and fire prevention principles. Ability to develop and present public education programs. Must be able to communicate effectively and complete all forms and reports legibly and accurately. Ability to read and interpret fire codes, building plans, blueprints and technical instructions in various formats. Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions connected with this type of work.
Requires a working knowledge of the current version of the Microsoft Office Professional software suite including proficiency with Word and Excel. Must have a basic understanding of the current version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Familiarity with CentralSquare Software applications based on an iSeries system is preferred. Working knowledge of current versions of Internet browsers and Microsoft Outlook is also highly recommended. Ability to learn specific computer applications used in the Department.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to pass physical examination at any time. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb stairs and ladders, and lift/carry up to twenty (20) pounds. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather for prolonged periods of time. Must have good vision with or without corrective lenses, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus quickly in varying shades of light. Possess good senses of hearing, taste and smell. Must be able to work effectively under the pressure of stressful, sometimes dangerous situations and deadlines. Working Conditions:
Work is performed in office, construction and inspection environments both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Must be available for any/all emergencies, which can extend the normal work period if required. Work may be potentially hazardous; including exposure to loud noise levels and vibrations, high and precarious places, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
