THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled heavy manual work, alone or as a member of a crew, in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water systems, wastewater systems, storm drains, streets, graffiti abatement or related public works and utility functions.
Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.
The current vacancies are in the Water Distribution section, however, the Maintenance Worker I/II eligibility list established may be used to fill current as well as future vacancies in any section, including Water, Wastewater or Streets. When assigned to the Water System Section, positions are flexibly allocated up through the Water Distribution Operator I/II/III levels, and may be filled at any level depending on the experience and certification levels of the applicant.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Water: Assists in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of water mains and service connections. Repairs leaks in mains, lines and valves. Assists in repairing, replacing and maintaining fire hydrants. Maintains other related facilities as required. Shovels earth, concrete and mud debris using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, picks and sledges. Removes weeds, cuts brush away from meter boxes, sample stations, fire hydrants, and other various city facilities. Operates various pneumatic tools such as rock drills, tampers, etc. Cleans, greases and oils Water Division owned mechanical equipment and tools. Maintains equipment to ensure proper working order. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks. Operates various motorized and mechanized equipment incidental to the duties of maintaining and effective water system for the City. Performs repairs on gate valves, chlorinates pipelines, tests hydraulic systems, performs other related duties as required.
Wastewater: Inspects equipment at wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations. Performs preventative maintenance and repair work. Lubricates and repacks pumps and motors. Cleans pumping station equipment. Works on rodding crew, and repair and cleaning of sewage lines by rodding and flushing. Assists in stoppages and clean-up operations on collection system. Operates close circuit television equipment to inspect condition of gravity sewer system. Assists in repairing, replacing and maintaining gravity sewer pipe and pressure pipe. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks and operates various motorized and mechanized equipment incidental to the duties of maintaining and effective wastewater system for the City. Performs other related duties as required.
Streets: Shovels earth or debris using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, picks and sledges. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks. Operates simple pneumatic tools, spreads and tamps paving material or gravel. Loads and unloads trucks; cuts brush; removes weeds; cleans culverts, drains and ditches. Maintains and repairs streets, sidewalks and curbs. Lays rock base, shovels and rakes hot asphalt. Mixes and pours concrete. Assists in the installation of street signs and traffic safety painting. Operates in the installation of street signs and traffic safety painting. Operates a variety of mechanized equipment including but not limited to, skip loaders, dump trucks, and 90 lb. jackhammers. Maintains equipment to ensure proper working order. Performs other related duties as required.
Facilities: Eradicates or removes graffiti visible to the public and may perform duties in public right of way. Applies paint to buildings, fixtures or equipment associated with graffiti removal. Maintains equipment to ensure proper working order. Operates a variety of mechanized equipment including but not limited to scissor lifts, power washing equipment, and paint spray equipment. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks and performs other related duties as required.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
License Requirements (for all levels):
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required. Within 6 months of employment, incumbent is required to obtain and, thereafter, maintain a California Class A driver's license with the following endorsements/restrictions:
Water: Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restrictions - No Endorsement
Wastewater: Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restriction - Tanker Endorsement. CWEA Wastewater Collection certification is desirable.
Streets: Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restrictions - No Endorsement
Facilities: Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restrictions - No Endorsement
Certificates:
Water Distribution Operator I: Possession of a valid California Water Resources Control Board Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator certificate.
Water Distribution Operator II: Possession of a valid California Water Resources Control Board Grade D2 Water Distribution Operator certificate.
Water Distribution Operator III: Possession of a valid California Water Resources Control Board Grade D3 Water Distribution Operator certificate.
A pre-employment medical examination is required before appointment is made. Pursuant to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, drug testing is required.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to :
Maintenance Worker I: 6 months of construction, maintenance or related work experience.
Maintenance Worker II: 18 months of related maintenance experience or one year experience as a Maintenance Worker I.
Water Distribution Operator I: 18 months of related maintenance experience or one year experience as a Maintenance Worker I, and possession of a valid California Water Resources Control Board Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator certificate. Formal training in the following areas is highly desirable: confined space prevention, asbestos safe handling and disposal, traffic safety control and flagging.
Water Distribution Operator II: 18 months of related maintenance experience or one year experience as a Water Distribution Operator I, and possession of a valid California Water Resources Control Board Grade D2 Water Distribution Operator certificate. Formal training in the following areas is highly desirable: confined space hazard prevention, asbestos safe handling and disposal, traffic safety control and flagging.
Water Distribution Operator III: Possession of a valid California Water Resources Control Board Grade D3 Water Distribution Operator certificate.
