This is a paid Internship position that performs a variety of professional and administrative work while assisting the Parks and Recreation Supervisor and the Recreation Technician in planning, developing, implementing, and directing the operations of a year-round city-wide recreation department and its programs.

This position serves under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Technician, and the Director of Parks, Recreation, and Golf. Exercises some direction over the Seasonal Recreation Program Staff.

Essential Duties
- Recreation Intern can expect to work days, evenings, and weekends.
- Assists Parks and Recreation staff in planning a diverse, year-round recreation programming, including the management and maintenance of sport fields/courts, aquatic facility, Armory, Skate Park/Ice Rink, and other recreation program facilities.
- Issues written and oral instructions to recreation program staff and assigns duties as needed
- Reviews program areas and assists in implementing changes or new programs to meet the recreational needs of the community.
- Assist community members with online registration for programs and activities.
- Assists Recreation Technician in promoting interest in recreation programs through public outreach, updating and advertising on Recreation Department website, distribution of program brochures, and public contacts, and online program registration; speaks before citizen groups, students, and other organizations.
- Assists in developing and implementing social media for the Parks and Recreation department that will assist in keeping the public informed of important information in regards to upcoming programs, changes, cancellations, and etc. Social media may consist of websites, Facebook, Twitter, and etc.
- Assist with the maintenance of athletic fields to including mowing, line painting, argillite application, fence replacement, net replacement, goal replacement, dragging of infields, brush removal and various other tasks.
- Schedules, provides logistical assistance for, and runs various activities throughout the year, such as sports tournaments, and events, and various other community-wide events utilizing city parks and recreation facilities.
- Takes a leadership role in running special events
- Assists in coordination of Armory usage with National Guard, Public schools, USD, Charitable fund raising organizations, auctions, general public, etc.
- Assist all Non-City Youth Sports Associations as needed
- Respond in a timely and effective manner to all correspondence involving the Parks and Recreation department.
- Assist in supervising youth sports leagues, such as baseball and softball.
- Assist Parks and Recreation Staff with daily Prentis Plunge Pool operations
The following items are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the proper performance of the functions of the position:
- In progress of obtaining a B.S. in Parks and Recreation, Sports Management, or a closely related field preferred
- Thorough knowledge of:
- The principles and practices of modern recreation programming
- Use of social media to promote the Recreation Department and keep the community updated
- Equipment and facilities required in a comprehensive recreation program
- Equipment and facilities related to aquatic programs and swimming pools
- Equipment needed to properly maintain athletic fields
- Ability to effectively make decisions and solve problems, employing good research skills, demonstrating consistency, responsibility, and timeliness.
- Demonstrate a commitment to customer service, using the talents of the organization to best meet the needs of the community.
- Valid Drivers License
