What are the responsibilities and job description for the UTILITY SERVICE WORKER I position at City of Vero Beach?
Under close supervision, installs, maintains and repairs water, sewer and reuse water systems; and performs related duties as assigned.The following duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of work performed by positions within this job classification. High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one ( 1) year of construction or other experience in performing heavy manual labor in an outdoor environment.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B. Must posses and maintain a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Water Distribution Operator Level III License or Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association Class C License in Wastewater Collection.
- Repairs and maintains water distribution and wastewater collection systems including the installation of mains, pipe lines, meters, hydrants, valves, water and irrigation meters and related system components.
- Repairs and replaces valves, fire hydrants, water distribution lines, sewer lines, manholes, air release valves, lift stations and structures.
- Inspects water and sewer lines, searches for leaks, measures flow and locates lines for contractors, other utility companies and co-workers.
- Operates trucks and construction/maintenance equipment as necessary to complete work projects; checks equipment for proper servicing, operation and safety and reports defects to supervisor; maintains inventory of tools and equipment.
- Installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of construction and repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.
- Prepares road and applies asphalt when construction is complete; repairs sidewalks and driveways and finishes concrete as required; replaces landscaping.
- Supports and actively promotes the City's safety programs. Follows standard operating procedures, observes safety practices and reports potential safety hazards.
- Knowledge of water distribution and sewer collection system maintenance practices and procedures including the proper use of tools and equipment and knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices applicable to maintenance work.
- Ability to safely operate assigned vehicles, power or hand tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy or bulky items frequently (up to 100 lbs.).
- Exposure to potential physical harm, moving traffic, dangerous machinery, infectious disease, hazardous chemicals, wild animals and extreme weather conditions. Works in trenches and around Heavy Equipment operated by others.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment for the position.
- City vehicles (service, flat bed and dump trucks and trailer), pumps, power valve turner, trencher, generators, radio, computers, concrete saw, and miscellaneous hand tools including shovels, sledge hammers, wrenches, pipe cutters, ratchets, saws, etc.
