JOB SUMMARY

The Crew Leader for the Parks & Recreation Department leads and participates in the work of crews performing equipment operations, manual labor and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of the City's parks, recreation facilities and buildings.

Salary amount offered will depend on qualifications. This is a non-exempt position.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures that routine maintenance schedules and special projects are carried out in a timely basis and according to plans.
  • Prepares work scheduled, makes assignments, and evaluates completed work.
  • Trains and evaluates crew members.
  • Leads work activities of equipment operators, manual laborers and semi-skilled workers engaged in mowing grass, cleaning parks and facilities, multi-field sports complex, and any other activities necessary in the operation and maintenance of a park system.
  • Ability to maintain quality playing fields by managing automatic irrigation systems, comprehensive turf maintenance programs to include mowing, fertilization, pest and weed management, and ball field maintenance practices which will include Little League, High School baseball / softball and College baseball / softball.
  • Operating knowledge on equipment such as : backhoe, fogging machine, dump truck, chain saw, tractor with attachments, weedeater, drill, circular saw, push mowers, blowers and other equipment used in the maintenance and operation of parks and facilities.
  • As assigned, performs vector control and / or application of weed and plant pest insecticides.
  • Responsible for preparation of athletic fields and facilities.
  • Responsible for purchasing small tools and supplies.
  • Observes and enforces all City and departmental safety rules and policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports.
  • Lifts heavy objects as required.
  • Subject to on-call hours.
  • Regular attendance at work and arrives on time.
  • Performs all other job related duties as assigned or as become apparent.
  • Ability to get along with other employees and the public.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Ability to sit, stand and transport self from worksite to worksite. Ability to drive a vehicle to and from various worksites. Employee will work in seasonal temperatures, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, climbing and lifting 40-60 pounds frequently and 60-100 pounds occasionally. Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, water, mud, noises, fumes and odors. Employee may be exposed to potential mechanical, chemical, electrical, fire and traffic hazards while operating maintenance equipment. Must be able to walk on loose, uneven and sloped ground. Ability to see and handle small objects and tools.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

High school diploma or GED equivalent AND three (3) years of progressively responsible parks or landscape maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Ability to obtain and maintain Pesticide Applicator License from TDA (weed and plant pest) and / or TDH(vector control) within six (6) months of employment. A review of your credit report is required and must meet City guidelines.

Knowledge of :

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Records maintenance and retention practices and procedures.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Park maintenance tools, materials, methods, and equipment.
  • Basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry trades.
  • Chemical, pesticide, and herbicide application, use, and storage practices and procedures.
  • Tool and equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Basic irrigation and sprinkler system maintenance.
  • Skill in :

  • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Reading and accurately interpreting manuals, plans, and related materials.
  • Supervising and leading the work of assigned staff.
  • Operating various types of park maintenance related tools and equipment.
  • Explaining policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    A valid State driver's license is required.
