JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the supervision and general management of an assigned division or unit of the Police Department.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Provides overall supervision for all sworn and non-sworn personnel assigned to the division; coordinates and provides staff training.
  • Ensures division compliance with all departmental rules and regulations and with the city personnel ordinances.
  • Evaluates division productivity and employee performance; researches, develops and implements strategies for improvement.
  • Assigns personnel to shifts and or units to ensure adequate coverage for division operations.
  • Ensures that all personnel remain informed of new policies, procedures, court rulings, and special operations; issues related memoranda.
  • Maintains division files and records.
  • Prepares and monitors the division budget.
  • Makes recommendations to the Chief on the status of vehicles, communications equipment, and personnel.
  • Responds to citizen complaints.
  • Maintains and oversees the issuance and inspection of vehicles, uniforms, and equipment.
  • Prepares a variety of regular and special reports.
  • Attends seminar and training as required.
  • Directs operations of a division as assigned which may include reviewing and analyzing trends and statistics in order to develop patrol strategies; directing and supervising patrol, investigative, or administrative operations; responding to complex or high profile events and assuming command until relieved by a superior officer, performing patrol functions as required; directing the School Resource Officer program; assigning cases to Investigators; conduct internal affairs investigations; and/or coordinating and overseeing background checks for job applicants.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of patrol and/or criminal investigation principles.
  • Knowledge of civil and criminal processes.
  • Knowledge of departmental and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local guidelines.
  • Knowledge of city streets and geography.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and restraint equipment.
  • Skill in conducting criminal investigations.
  • Skill in operating emergency vehicles.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the work of personnel.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Police Chief assigns work in terms of division goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of division activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, the Georgia Law Enforcement Handbook, and department and city policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied law enforcement, management, and supervisory duties. The variety of tasks to be performed, the variety of issues to be considered, and potentially dangerous and life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to direct the operations of an assigned division or unit of the Police Department. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of division operations and contributes to the safety of city residents and visitors and to the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, elected and appointed official, court personnel, attorneys, suspects, victims, witnesses, representatives of other public safety agencies, business and community leaders, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services; to give or exchange information; to resolve problems; to motivate or influence persons; or to justify, defend or negotiate matters.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, utilizes the sense of smell, and distinguishes between shades of color.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and in the field. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of specialized law enforcement equipment.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Direct supervision typically involves the ability to manage schedules, performance, and the interpersonal issues of other employees. It may involve the ability to recommend changes to work priorities or strategies within an area, department, or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of an associate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field preferred.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department usually interpreted to require five years of related experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Must possess a law enforcement certification in Georgia as issued by the Peace Officers Standards and Training Council.

Pay: $54,288.00 - $76,003.00 per year
