What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant to the City Manager/Special Projects Coordinator position at City of Virginia Beach?
This position will support the Assistant to the City Manager/Community Affairs Liaison by assisting with the investigation and response to complaints/inquiries directed to the Office of the City Manager by citizens regarding services, policies, and ordinances. The position serves at the pleasure of the City Manager and is not considered part of the merit service as defined in City Code, section 2-75.
Duties include the following:
- Assists in communications to the Mayor and members of city council on a daily basis to provide information regarding services, policies and ordinances for their information and for them to respond to constituents, frequently contacting citizens for them or preparing correspondence in their behalf; serves as the city's contact for various community/homeowners’ associations to provide information on city services/policies and to assist in acquiring any necessary assistance.
- Develops, plans, coordinates, and executes ongoing and short-term assignments; Coordinates the work of subject matter experts responsible for needed materials, reports or services.
- Provide regular status updates to leadership on critical path initiatives supporting overall objectives; will utilize multiple information and service delivery systems, and interdepartmental resources to effectively execute assigned projects. Provide a list of alternatives for management to use when making decisions.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of public relations programs undertaken by the department; coordinate department’s official response to citizen complaints and inquiries by researching applicable policies and practices and then composing an appropriate response for signature by higher authority.
- Assists in overseeing the City of Virginia Beach’s compliance with Title 2 of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Expectations of this role includes serving staff by providing guidance for inquires, policy decisions, grievance investigations, accessibility audits, advising on building designs and public projects, and addressing citizen concerns.
The incumbent will work collaboratively with the City Attorney’s Office, city staff, and external stakeholders to manage projects that assure barriers to accessibility are recognized and plans are made for their removal.
