Job Duties:
The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Construction Inspector to coordinate various construction activities for the Construction and Engineering Division.
This position will be filled as a Construction Inspector II or Construction Inspector III depending on qualifications and experience of selected applicant.
- Construction Inspector II G.22 ($47,803.80 - $74,095.89)
- Construction Inspector III G.24 ($52,703.70 - $81,690.74)
In this role, your duties will include to do the following:
- Perform inspections, make minor field engineering decisions, as well as processes records, and financial data associated with construction repair or renovation of highway and drainage facilities, or water and sewer utility systems in order to ensure compliance with city and state standards and contractual documents.
- Ensure use of proper methods and materials
- Conducts various tests to ensure proper construction of highways, including curbs, curbs and gutters, sidewalks and pavement, drainage systems, including structures, pipelines and appurtenances.
- Approve requests for payment to confirm actual work performed
- Review and recommend time extension requests
- Determine need and assist in negotiation, and prepare drafts of formal notifications, work orders, and change orders.
- Municipal government project inspection, building inspection, SWPPP inspection experience and contract management and change order negotiation experience.
- Constructability review of construction documents experience and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications for Excel, Word, and Outlook.
The ideal candidate will have current certifications for Erosion & Sediment Control and VDOT materials Certification Program for asphalt, concrete, pavement marking and soils & aggregate compaction.
**This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies **

Minimum Requirements:

High School or GED, plus five (5) years progressive experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities; or any equivalent combination of progressive experience and technical training which provides the necessary knowledge and experience. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Construction Inspector III Minimum Qualifications:
High School or GED plus eight (8) years progressive experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, or any equivalent combination of progressive experience and technical training which provides the necessary knowledge and experience. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of the Virginia Community College System Civil Engineering Technology (CET), Career Studies Certificate or pertinent certification from the National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technicians (NICET).

Preferences:
