Job Duties:

The Virginia Beach Convention Center exists to facilitate successful experiences by offering a full range of high-quality services and amenities for conventions, professional trade shows, consumer shows and community events. The right candidate for this position will be a self-motivated individual who enjoys a challenging work environment and wants to make a difference in our organization. You will be an integral part of a team committed to providing exceptional customer service to our clients and you will be a primary resource responsible for leading staff responsible for the repair and upkeep of the facility.

Job duties include the following:

  • Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm however, work schedule will vary based upon event activity and can include nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • The starting salary for this position will be $55,338.90.

  • Responsible for the maintenance, system operation and general condition of a public assembly facility and its equipment.

  • Lead, hire, supervise, schedule, train and participate in the work of staff responsible for facility maintenance; manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and occasionally stressful environment.

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for the facility, the physical plant, systems, finishes, fixtures, equipment, and grounds.

  • Use a CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) to generate and track work orders and maintain records of all maintenance activity.

  • Train facility staff in the proper and safe operation of facility systems, equipment and tools; maintain a culture of safety in the workplace.

  • Perform regular inspections of facility, equipment and systems.

  • Monitor and control supplies and equipment; order supplies and tools as necessary; prepare documents for equipment procurement; prepare technical bid specifications and contracts for contracted services.

  • Plan and coordinate facility maintenance schedules with facility use schedules and avoid conflicts between events and maintenance.

  • Responsible for facility sustainability initiatives, including but not limited to, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification.

  • Coordinate maintenance activity and work cooperatively with Grounds-keeping, Housekeeping and Set-up, Event Services and contractors to ensure facility readiness.

  • Develop and maintain budget for utilities, equipment, supplies, contracts and personnel.

  • Work a varied schedule based upon event activity including days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS:
Requires any combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience and training equivalent to a MINIMUMS: of five (5) years in a facility maintenance position including a MINIMUMS: of two (2) years in a supervisory role.

Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs.

This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.

Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.

Preferences:

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.

  • Experience working in a public assembly facility;
  • Experience with building automation systems (Automated Logic, Metysis, Siemens, Tracer);
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS);
  • Knowledge of building trades (such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, plumbing);
  • Industry certification such as Certified Facility Manager.
  • Master Electrician license.
  • Master HVAC license.
  • Journeyman’s License

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
