What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator position at City of Virginia Beach?
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works department is currently hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator to perform a variety of duties and maintenance tasks associated with the City Dredge such as:
- Safely operate the dredging vessel (Rudee II) while excavating material in Rudee Inlet.
- Safely operate the skiff (small boat) tasks may include connecting/ disconnecting pipelines, maneuvering the dredge and floating equipment, and transiting crew members
- Safely operate the tender (tugboat) to support the dredge and floating equipment during associated tasks. Tasks may include towing the dredge and pipelines, setting/ retrieving dredge swing anchors, connecting/ disconnecting pipelines, transiting crew members to and from land/floating equipment.
- Safely operate a backhoe, bulldozer, forklift, excavator, and crane in support of the operation.
- Utilize computer programs onboard the dredge to effectively maximize production.
- Maintain awareness of watercrafts using the channel while conducting the operation.
- Ensure oiler performs regular checks and documents findings accordingly.
- Ensure all precautions are taken to avoid accidents and incidents.
- Ensure all occupants have their PPE on while performing duties at all times.
- Monitor sea state and weather conditions for changes that may affect the safe operation of the vessels.
- Maintain Navigational Aid assets according to established guidelines while safely operating the skiff (small boat) and tender (tugboat).
- Maintain electronic logs and written daily reports of assignments.
- Communicate respectfully with citizens, coworkers, and managers.
- Conduct safety awareness meetings with the crew before tasks are started.
- Lead/ supervise the crew and their work activities in the absence of the supervisor.
- Train team members to operate and maintain associated equipment.
- Perform other duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirement as demanded by those duties described or less.
- Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workload and the department's needs.
- Follow instructions precisely and work diligently to achieve the objective.
Work Schedule:
Labor Day-Memorial Day: Fri. 6:30am – 9:00pm; Sat. 6:30am – 8:00pm; Sun. 6:30am 8:30pm
Memorial Day-Labor Day: Fri. 3:30pm – 6:00am; Sat. 3:30pm – 5:00am; Sun. 3:30pm – 5:00am
**This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies **
*Employee will receive an additional 5% shift differential for Memorial Day-Labor Day.
*** Class B CDL Required.
*CDL Hiring Bonus - The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.
- $1,000 with first paycheck
- $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim evaluation (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
- $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
