What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Information Clerk position at City of Virginia Beach?
Job Duties:
The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney is responsible for prosecuting those charged with violating the criminal laws of Virginia in Virginia Beach. We are seeking a legal information clerk to perform clerical work such as entering data into a case management system, running and analyzing criminal records, generating reports, filing by terminal digit number. There is required cross training and back-up of other office functions to meet peak workload demands. The ability to work flexible hours when needed.
In order to be a successful candidate in this position, you must be able to manage multiple tasks, organize detailed information, and understand and follow complex instructions. This person should be VCIN/NCIC certified within 3 months of the start date. We also desire candidates who are self-motivated, detail-oriented, works well under pressure and meet deadlines. The candidates must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Lastly, the selected candidates should be able to sit and operate a computer terminal for up to 6 hours each day and lift boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.
Preferences for this position include:
- Academic degree in criminal justice or similar field
- Professional experience with a Virginia Court or Commonwealth’s Attorney Office
- Prior professional experience in the criminal justice field
- Experience running criminal records – NCIC/VCIN Certification
- Data Entry Experience
- Experience updating databases and case management systems (i.e. CMS, eProsecutor, Pistol, Axon Records)
- Experience performing clerical work (i.e. answering and transferring phone calls, filing, copying, etc.)
- Experience working with file organization and Records Management.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus three (3) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as database management, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Special Requirements All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
