City of Virginia Beach Public Libraries is seeking two dynamic Librarian II- Special Collections Librarians to work with a team of professionals within the Libraries of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Librarian II- Special Collections Librarian duties will include, but not be limited to:
Liaises and partners with State and local government, area businesses, nonprofit organizations, and the educational community to connect customers with library resources.
In charge of Archives, Local History and Genealogy, Municipal Reference collections, and working on web archiving
Develops and maintains an awareness of industry-standard resources and trends, and best practices in training methods to be able to anticipate and respond to customers’ needs.
Plans, markets, presents, and evaluates specialized and complex programs and classes that reflect the library’s strategic initiatives and increase the public awareness of library services and resources.
Conducts library tours, and creates finding aids and displays to increase awareness of the library’s services and community resources.
Manages the research process by negotiating customer deadlines and monitoring and advancing the progress of research in order to ensure that equitable, quality reference service is provided.
Coordinates special projects, including preservation. Supervises, trains, ad evaluates volunteers and interns in the completion of special projects.
Collaborates with VBPL’s Development Manager to seek grant funding for library local history and genealogy resources and programs, and the library’s archives.
Cultivates donors to develop the library’s special collections. Advises on the ongoing organization, preservation, and storage of archival materials.
Assists customers in accessing library resources.
Assists customers in operating and troubleshooting library technology and personal digital devices.
Interprets, explains, and applies library policies and procedures to internal and external customers.
Evaluates the collection using a variety of tools and resources to make recommendations for additions, withdrawals, or replacement.
Leads or participates on teams to develop library system policies and procedures. Collaborates with colleagues to develop programs, share resources, and communicate trends in library services.
Leads and supervises staff in creating and implementing annual goals and objectives reflecting the City and Library’s vision to ensure quality customer service to internal and external customers.
Provides written and verbal performance feedback of staff.
May serve on departmental and City interview teams to hire staff.
Participates in professional organizations and continuing education activities to anticipate and meet customer needs.
May act as Building Manager in the absence of the library management. Makes decisions and resolves conflicts by applying library policies and procedures in order to ensure smooth operations of the library.
Monitors safety, security, and general maintenance of the library facility and outreach site to ensure a safe environment for internal and external customers.
Performs other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Requires a Master of Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university, plus two (2) years of professional librarian experience, to reflect experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities (combination of supervisory and professional librarian experience).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.

Preferences:
Minimum 2 years experience working with Archives or other Special Collections
Minimum 1 years’ experience in organizing and presenting Adult programming
1 years’ experience supervising staff
1 year experience working with team/groups
Minimum 1 year’ experience preparing written communication, including reports and correspondence
Minimum 2 years’ experience using a wide range of library resources including print and digital resources
Experience with CONTENTdm, or other cataloging systems
