Job Duties:
The City of Virginia Beach is recruiting for a Permit Technician I to join the Permits & Inspections division of the Planning & Community Development Department. This position will join a team of frontline customer service experts managing the permitting process for a variety of different trades.
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Meet and greet homeowners, contractors, consultants staff in person at the Permits and Inspections front counter.
Answer multiple phone lines, having the ability to provide and interpret information regarding permitting inspection processes and procedures.
Assist Building Official with the issuance of permits for new construction and remodeling, accepting payment and issuing receipts through the online permitting system.
Scan and upload applications, associated plans, and documents to permit files.
Research information such as State Contractor and Business License in compliance with permit issuance as allowed by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
Assist in gathering information for FOIA requests.
Perform clerical and routine administrative work as assigned.
Assists with other activities as assigned by supervisor or division head.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Requires high school or GED plus three (3) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as planning aide, permit technician or jobs related to the construction industry or permit expediting; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must obtain DHCD Permit Technician certification within 18 months of hire per the Virginia Construction Code. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing
- Experience with the City's development processes and the construction and code enforcement field
- Skill in use of computers, including Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and Accela Automation (or similar software program)
- Ability to understand and follow processes and procedures in a timely manner
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Experience working for municipal government and providing customer service at a front desk for a construction office and/or as a cashier
- ICC and/or DHCD Permit Technician certification

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
