What are the responsibilities and job description for the Precinct Desk Officer I position at City of Virginia Beach?
The Virginia Beach police Department is made up of four precincts, each covering a portion of the City. Precinct Desk Officers (PDOs) serve as the initial contact for the public within each of the precincts. They perform administrative, security, and computerized tasks in the disposition of precinct functions; maintain precinct warrants, found/recovered property logs to determine current disposition; retrieve information from local, state and national computer files to determine suspect's prior criminal record or to determine if there are outstanding warrants; and enter summons data and booking information to update existing computer system data files. Some assignments may include processing prisoners and their property incidental to arrest. Interaction may be required with individuals who are unclean, HIV positive, intoxicated and/or use vulgar language. At times, PDOs assist police officers by performing a search of a same sex detainee. (Training will be provided to carry out these tasks.)
Hours:
Precinct Desk Officers can expect to work any of the following shifts: 0700 to 1530; 1500 to 2330 or 2300 to 0730, depending on the Precinct they are assigned to. Both the 1st and the 2nd Precincts are 24-hour operations with the 3rd and 4th Precincts in operation from 0700 to 2300.
During the summer months, the 2nd Precinct generally has the highest level of activity for PDOs. While regular shifts are assigned semi-annually based on seniority, it is important to recognize that shift assignments are subject to change to meet coverage requirements.
The City offers a generous benefits package, which includes health, dental and life insurance, retirement and savings plans, maternity/paternity and parental leave, holidays and Paid-Time-Off.
