Job Duties:
The Virginia Beach Police Department conducts a year-round recruitment and selection process for the position of Police and Animal Control Officers. It is not unusual for us to conduct background investigations on more than 400 applicants/year. A comprehensive background investigation is a critical element of the selection process.
Part-time investigators assist the Training Bureau staff in performing background investigations for all applicants. Duties include reviewing information and records submitted in the application process, running queries through various law enforcement databases, interviewing the applicant as well as their employment and personal references and writing a formal summary report which is reviewed in a committee process.
Work hours may vary, but average 24 to 28 hours/week. Typical working hours will fall between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, but some evening and weekend work may be required.

Criminal History: Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals). Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations which are discussed separately, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last 5 years.
Traffic Violations: Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.
Drugs: Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult. Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.

Minimum Requirements:
Any combination of education (beyond high school) and experience equivalent to six years’ experience as a police officer, detective, investigator, or related field which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; and successful completion of a police background investigation including polygraph examination. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.

Law Enforcement/Public Safety experience
Experience as an investigator for a federal, state, or municipal agency
Strong written and oral communications skills
Experience using interviewing skills
Experience with MS Word or other word processing software.
Experience conducting investigations for employment consideration are desirable.
Special Instructions:
Successful completion of a police background investigation, including polygraph exam.
Must have U.S. citizenship or ten-year residency as a prerequisite for CJIS/VCIN certification.
Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.
Some personal travel may be required using personal vehicle, but the department will reimburse based on city mileage reimbursement policy.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
