Job Duties:
As the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Virginia, the Virginia Beach Police Department proudly serves its residents and visitors by providing a safe community and improving the quality of life for all members and guests. Our Support Division provides assistance that contributes to the successful operation of our department. We are currently seeking a Public Safety Investigator to perform duties, inclusive of, but not limited to:
Processing traffic accident investigation and report requests including receiving, sorting, prioritizing, tracking, accepting payment, and responding to all requests within a mandated time frame.
Analyzing individual requests to determine proper response.
Locating and analyzing FR300 (crash) reports for accuracy and compliance.
Coordinating with Police Officers and Police Sergeants regarding missing, inaccurate, and incomplete reports.
Utilizing a quality control technology tool to identify potential missing reports and conduct investigation to verify report status.
Compiling and redacting responsive documents.
Entering all requests, supporting information, and payments into a tracking and searchable Gov QA database.
Acting as a liaison between DMV and Police Officers, and Police Supervisors regarding FR-300 (crash report) errors.
Conducting comprehensive background checks utilizing a variety of investigative technology resources in response to concealed handgun permit applications.
Providing an appropriate electronic response to the courts for concealed handgun permits based on background investigations
Other duties as requested.
Hours:
32 hours week; Hours and days off are negotiable though a set schedule is required.

Drugs: Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult. Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.

Minimum Requirements:
Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to six (6) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements. VCIN/NCIC/CJIS certification is required, in addition to the successful completion of a background check, candidates must have U.S. citizenship or be a lawful resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.

Preferences:
- Experience with a variety of Police recordkeeping systems and programs (including VCIN/NCIC, GovQA, Axon/PISTOL/RMS, TREDS, LINX)
- Experience providing customer service and demonstrating a strong attention to detail.
- Experience using computer applications, including Microsoft Office with the ability to create and track information in spreadsheets using Excel, using Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Experience with traffic accident investigations and reports
- Experience conducting background checks
- Experience providing complex and detailed information both verbally and in writing.

Special Instructions:
Because this is a position within the Police Department, candidates will be required to complete an Authorization for Release of Information Form and Criminal Record Information Request prior to the start of the interview. Background checks will only be performed on candidates chosen for employment.
VCIN/NCIC/CJIS certification is required, in addition to the successful completion of a background check, candidates must have U.S. citizenship or be a lawful resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
Candidates interviewing for this position will complete a practical exercise before their scheduled interview.
Must have, or obtain, a current and valid driver’s license.
Successful completion of a police background investigation, including polygraph exam.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
