The Recreation Class Instructor – Chess duties will include, but not be limited to:
Plans specific recreation class activities appropriate to participants' age groups and subject matter
Provides supervisor with written lesson plan of class content for approval for beginner to advance participants
Formulates and submits supply sheets and instructional handouts to provide supervisor and students with class objectives and supplies needed
Guides students throughout class sessions with proper techniques and instructions in order to complete a designated skill level
Assists in developing ideas for new class programs in order to offer a quality programs.
Notifies supervisor, site, and students in case of illness or absence to accommodate participants
Handles discipline problems with students to facilitate program functioning
Establishes and enforces class rules and policies for students and carries out program directives to ensure program continuity and participant safety
Provides records and information for statistical documentation
Treats minor injuries of participants or takes needed steps to ensure participant receives proper medical attention

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: At least three (3) years related experience in a specialized interest or skill, which includes a minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience or five (5) years experience in the subject; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Chess instructors work primarily weekday evenings 1-2 hours at the Seatack Recreation Center Location.
The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally based on class schedules.
As a condition of employment, all part-time employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided your training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
