What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Mechanic I position at City of Virginia Beach?
The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents. Be a part of our dedicated and exemplary workforce who provide these essential services. We are currently hiring for the position of Utility Mechanic I with our Sewer Collection team.
Special Requirements for Public Utilities, Operations & Maintenance: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs as we are a 24/7/365 department. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned.
This posting is exclusively for a weekend crew position with a pre-set schedule of Friday-Monday for the hours of 6:30am-5:00pm, including afterhours standby. Please do not apply to this posting if you cannot commit to that schedule.
Duties & expectations for this position include…
- Perform manual labor such as hand excavation and movement of heavy items in connection with the construction, maintenance, and repair of sanitary sewer lines and mains
- Check and clean sanitary sewer manholes, laterals, mains, etc.
- May assist Crew Leader on occasion to enter or research data on a laptop or tablet in the field
- May occasionally work in a confined space
- Maintain personal protective equipment
- Operate motor vehicles and construction equipment
- Knowledge and proper use of basic hand tools, common maintenance and manual labor tasks and the use of associated tools
- Lifting, without assistance, heavy articles that weigh approximately 50 pounds
- Ability to understand written and verbal directions and instructions
- Assist crew members in loading and unloading materials and equipment
- Other tasks/duties as assigned
NOTE: Selected candidates not already possessing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) MUST be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License Instruction Permit within six (6) months of employment and then obtain a full Class A CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsements with nine (9) months of employment.
If you possess a Class B CDL, and you are offered the position of Utility Mechanic I we will assist you in completing the upgrade courses and skills test within 90 days of hire (course & test offered in-house at no expense to employees). Failure to obtain a Class A CDL with endorsements may result in demotion or termination.
The City of Virginia Beach complies with all federal mandates related to positions requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The City will verify that all employees and prospective employees are registered in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. New employee to the City? If you already have a Class A, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with above endorsements, a $4,000.00 hiring Bonus will be offered as follows:
- $1,000 with first paycheck
- $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim evaluation - with “meets expectation” performance rating
- $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period of one (1) year - with “meets expectation” performance rating
**Once hiring bonus is paid out over a year, a $4,000 annual stipend will be applied ($153.85 per pay period – every two weeks)
