What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Mechanic I position at City of Virginia Beach?
The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents. Become a part of our dedicated workforce who provide these essential services. We are currently hiring for a Utility Mechanic I position within our Sewer Pump Stations team.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLIC UTILITIES, OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status. This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
What will you be doing?
As an employee on the Sewer Pump Station team you will be:
- Performing heavy manual labor in connection with the construction, maintenance, and repair of sanitary sewer pumping stations and related equipment
- Ability to lift, without assistance, heavy articles such as pump components and manhole covers that weigh approximately 50 pounds
- Operate a non-CDL motor vehicle
- Utilize computerized mapping to navigate service area and identify utilities
- Ensure the proper tools, equipment, and materials are available to complete daily routine maintenance and repairs
- Maintain personal protective equipment
- Display knowledge and proper use and care of basic hand tools, hydraulic tools, common tool maintenance, and manual labor tasks and the use of associated tools
- Assist in diagnose and troubleshooting of utility problems/mechanical pump failures and/or pump malfunctions
- Generate/follow computerized work orders (iPad), monitor, and respond to alarms at Sewer Pumping Stations and prioritize tasks to accomplish repairs
- Prepare written and computerized documents for work activities
- Follow oral and written instructions and safety precautions/practices for construction work
- Ability to work off of extension ladders and in confined spaces following proper DEQ and VOSH Standards and Environmental Regulations, and Standard Operating Procedures
- Attend safety and job-related trainings as assigned
- Performs other job duties as determined by the supervisor based on workload and department needs
- As we are a 24/7/365 department all teams are responsible for responding to service calls and emergencies outside of standard working hours, including weekend and holidays. All members must have flexibility to work an assigned rotation for weekend/holiday standby coverage
