Job Duties:
The Police Department’s Animal Care and Adoption Center provides veterinary care to animals impounded in the shelter. Approximately 5,000-6,000 animals are impounded annually. The Veterinarian is supported by a full-time Veterinary Technician and two veterinary assistants. As a team, approximately 2,000 spay or neuter surgeries are performed annually as well as providing other preventative and critical animal care.
Under the direction of the supervising veterinarian, the duties of the Licensed Veterinary Technician include:
- Provide compassionate care to all patients.
- Perform pre- and post- op care for canine and feline patients.
- Assist with surgeries, taking/monitoring vitals, assist veterinarian in administering anesthesia.
- Administer fluids.
- Perform heartworm, leukemia, fecal and other tests.
- Collect specimens.
- Conducting laboratory tests.
- Administer medication, vaccination, and injections.
- Maintain patient records.
- Maintain controlled drug inventory and log.
- Perform dental scaling procedures.
- Aid the veterinarian and other shelter staff, as required.
- Ordering of supplies and medications weekly.
- Other duties as required.

Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Must have a current license, in good standing, to practice as a veterinary technician in Virginia in accordance with Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine eligibility requirements prior to first day of employment. Successful completion of a police background investigation. Must have, or obtain within twelve (12) months of employment, certification to euthanize. Must maintain certification for the duration of employment. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Upon hire, the selected candidate will be required to receive rabies pre-exposure vaccination provided by the City of Virginia Beach Occupational Safety and Health Services.
