Depending on location assignment, duties could include but not be limited to:
- Greeting customers
- Assisting with enforcing rules and regulations
- Assisting with administrative duties
- Assisting in opening and closing locations/facilities
- Assisting in maintaining facilities in a clean and safe condition
- Assisting with implementing programs
- Assisting with planning and setting up daily work
- Assisting with distributing equipment and supplies
- Operating tools and equipment
- Event set up and break down
- Assisting in the care and well-being of animals
- Assisting with cashier duties
- Working outside in extreme weather
- Responsible for collecting revenue
- Assisting with writing and submitting reports
- Reporting incidents and discrepancies to proper authorities
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and organization/company needs.

VB Summer Youth Employment Program is designed to provide workplace readiness training and meaningful work experiences for youth and young adults residing in the City of Virginia Beach or VB Foster Care System, between the ages of 16 – 21 on or before June 11th, 2025. Participants will have opportunities to discover and explore their talents, acquire new skills, set career goals, and learn more about the community in which they live while earning an income.
Participants may be required to work varied hours a week at worksites within various City departments and private companies, performing various duties related to that particular organization’s mission. The program averages 27 hours of on-site work per week. Hours are subject to change to ensure the success of a youth participant at their job site.
These are temporary seasonal positions:
General Program Youth Workers will begin June 16, 2025, and finish employment August 6, 2025.
Parks After Dark Youth Workers could begin mid-May and finish employment August 23, 2025.
Job placement will be determined by program staff. Program staff evaluate the applicant’s skill level, interest, transportation availability, and requirements of each job before placing a participant.
Participants are restricted from being placed as a direct report of a family member. Participants will be required to inform SYEP Staff of any relatives who are employed with the City of Virginia Beach on the application. If a participant fails to disclose this information, this could result in removal from the program.
All participants must attend the (SYEP) Job Readiness Orientation and other program related trainings. Orientation will begin June 16, 2025.
Participants must commit to not miss more than three (3) consecutive days, and five (5) total days of the program.
As a condition of employment, all Parks and Recreation employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided your training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30 am-5:00 pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
