What are the responsibilities and job description for the PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER position at City of Visalia?
THE DIVISION
The Parks Maintenance Division manages the City’s community parks, neighborhood parks, sports fields, and Downtown landscape, the maintenance of 292 acres of parks, and 164 acres of open spaces. The Trail Maintenance Division manages the City’s trails, bike paths, ponding basins, and parking lots, the maintenance of 25 miles of trails, and 20 acres of recharge basins. The Division is charged with providing safe, clean, attractive parks and facilities in adequate numbers distributed throughout the community.
The Park Maintenance Worker performs a wide variety of trail and landscape maintenance tasks including minor tree pruning, shrub trimming, litter cleanup, and minor irrigation repair. Some examples of duties include: Prunes trees and shrubs using hand or power saws. Controls and abates weeds and pests through the use of chemical applications. Maintains turf areas by edging, fertilizing, sweeping, spraying and aerating. Plants and removes trees, shrubs and plants. Cleans parking lots and other trail areas. Empties trash containers and otherwise maintains the appearance of grounds areas. Assists in the maintenance, repair, and installation of irrigation systems. Responds to citizen complaints and explains trail related rules and other applicable regulations to trail patrons. Responds to emergency and after hour calls.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will be self-driven and possess a high level of professionalism. They will be able to perform a wide variety of gardening and landscape maintenance, have knowledge of irrigation systems, irrigation construction and other mechanical maintenance tasks. In addition, the candidate will need to effectively communicate with supervisor, coworkers, and the public on maintenance issues in their assigned areas. The candidate must also be able to accurately maintain and complete records and follow safe work practices.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAny combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:
- One (1) year of landscape or ground maintenance experience.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C, California Driver's License, by time of appointment.
- Possession of a Qualified Pesticide Applicators Certificate is desirable.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
Positions in this class require moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting, and carrying loads weighing between 50 to 95 pounds. Positions also involve fieldwork resulting in exposure to the weather.
