Position
Wastewater Worker I (V20) : $4,932.29 - $5,995.17 per month.
Wastewater Worker II (V22) : $5,178.83 - $6,294.97 per month.
- Note : This is a flexibly staffed position. It is anticipated that the position will be filled at the Wastewater Worker I level. After completion of 30 months as a Wastewater Worker I, the incumbent may be eligible to advance to Wastewater Worker II.
Incumbents perform sewer cleaning and obstacle clearing work. Typical duties include entering of sewers, trenching, excavating and equipment operation; and inspecting and repairing sewers. This position reports to a Public Works Supervisor.

WASTEWATER WORKER I
Positions in this class work in the field performing a variety of sewer maintenance activities which include the entering of sewers, trenching, excavating, and equipment operation. Positions in this class perform work which is highly structured, which seldom varies, and which is performed in accordance with established instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and, after training, are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to the supervisor for instructions. WASTEWATER WORKER II
Positions in this class work in the field performing sewer maintenance duties that are specialized in the operation of high-pressure jet pipe cleaning equipment, including the entering and inspection of sewers. Positions in this class are assigned for a major portion of the incumbent's time to perform skilled sewer maintenance work. Positions in this class perform work which is highly structured, which seldom varies, and which is performed in accordance with established instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and, after training, are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to the supervisor for instructions.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training, education, and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE : A typical entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in sewer maintenance, or experience performing sewer maintenance and cleaning work. Experience at or equivalent to the level of Maintenance Worker Trainee in the City of Vista, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed above is also qualifying.
LICENSE / CERTIFICATION :
Possession of valid Class "A" California Driver's License, with tanker endorsement. (If applicant does not possess a Class A license, the City will assist with the training to receive the Class A license, which is to be obtained within 6 months of hire.) Possession of a California Water Pollution Control Association, Collection System Certificate, Grade I, within 18 months of hire.
KNOWLEDGE OF :
Sewer cleaning equipment, including high pressure jet cleaning equipment; methods of sewer entrance and inspection; hand and portable power tools and power equipment; trenching and excavating equipment and the appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
ABILITY TO :
Use hand and portable power tools and power equipment; work in confined spaces and with high pressure and moderately complex pumping equipment; recognize dangerous working conditions and observe strict safety precautions; perform heavy physical labor; maintain simple records; use herbicides as needed; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instructions and establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively verbally and in a written manner; observe and interpret data, and analyze and solve problems. The employee must be able to work indoor office environments / outdoor in the field environments (depending on position); This position requires entry into confined spaces in sewer lines observing State-mandated regulations governing confined space entry procedures. The employee may have to move up to 10 lbs. and transport up to 75 lbs. objects frequently (depending on position). Vision abilities required by this job include the ability to detect, determine, perceive, identify, estimate, and assess work related objects and / or work products based on position specific designated tasks. The employee may be required to work overtime to complete assignments. Must be able to work a flexible schedule. Use of personal vehicle during employment may also be required.
New hire Wastewater Workers, upon completion of their probationary periods (12 months), the employee must live within an area as identified by Google Maps as within 45 minute response time of the Public Works Department, 1165 E. Taylor Street as a condition of employment. Incumbents will be required to work mandatory standby.
