Water Plant Operator

The City of Wahpeton is accepting applications for a full-time Water Plant Operator position. Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED) and a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months. Applicants must be able to perform water treatment processing and analysis, conduct equipment maintenance, and provide compliance with regulatory requirements. A preferred candidate would have experience in these areas, but we are willing to train the right candidate.

The 2025 salary range for this position is $45,185.00 to $61,540.00 ($21.72 - $29.59 per hour) with starting wage dependent upon experience. CITY OF WAHPETON JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Water Plant Operator Status: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: 12

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Water Plant Superintendent and Senior Water Plant Operator, performs the duties of municipal water treatment including adjusting water flow, inspections of treatment process components, monitoring chemical feed rates, collection and analysis of water samples, equipment maintenance and recordkeeping related to regulatory compliance. As a disaster service worker, this position is subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned by superiors and subject to mandatory emergency call out.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned, as necessary.

  • Operates water wells, treatment plant, and storage facilities to produce finished water meeting regulatory drinking water standards in sufficient quantity to meet daily demands.
  • Monitors and evaluates the treatment process based on water quality sampling and adjusts unit processes as necessary to produce treated water in compliance with established water quality standards and to ensure optimum plant performance.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records of treatment processes and procedures, calibration of instrumentation, equipment maintenance and repairs. Provides superintendent with information to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures, state and federal regulations.
  • Performs water quality tests for operational and quality control
  • Responsible for buildings and grounds maintenance
  • Working knowledge of wells, pumps, motors, sludge collection systems, lime press, filters, air compressors, air dryer, pneumatic valves, chemical feeders and pumps, wells, clarifier basin, Co2 basin and clear well, weirs intake valve and screen, mixer recorder, meters, and transmitters, plumbing and heating, electrical/mechanical hoist, lifting equipment, pallet, and hand trucks, plant vehicles, and liquid chemical storage tanks etc.
  • Adept at problem solving operations process interruptions and quickly implementing contingency plans.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school education or equivalent and two years of college or other specialized training in an environmental science or water treatment or any satisfactory combination

of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid driver’s license (must obtain Class B or A license within 1 year of hire)
  • North Dakota Water Treatment Operator Class 1 Certification (must obtain within 2 years)
  • North Dakota Water Distribution Operator Class 1 Certification (must obtain within 2 years)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Requires a knowledge of practices and procedures of freshwater treatment and distribution.
  • Working knowledge in safety precautions, common hazards, and chemical handling.
  • Ability to use computer supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) program, Microsoft Office, the internet and electronic communication devices.
  • Ability to plan and organize work, meet schedules and timelines, and maintain records.
  • Ability to read and understand manuals for machinery, equipment, processes, and instrumentation systems. Ability to apply mathematical calculations to various job functions.
  • Communicate effectively with other operators and supervisors on the technical level.
  • Monitor chemical feed rates, flow quantities, detention and contact times, and hydraulic loadings as required for plant operations.
  • On-Call duty for water system emergencies.

The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
