Position Description
The City of Walnut Creek is seeking a full-time experienced Assistant or Associate Traffic Engineer to join the Development Engineering Division of the Public Works Department.
Salary
The current salary range for an Assistant Traffic Engineer is $117,917 to $142,434 annually and $132,167 to $160,644 for an Associate Traffic Engineer. Placement in the position and range will depend on qualifications.

About the Department and Division
The Public Works Department provides a wide variety of services that improve the quality of community life in Walnut Creek including Engineering services, maintenance of parks and open space, public facilities and buildings, traffic signals, streets and drainage, vehicle and equipment, parking garages and meters as well as administering a Clean Water program.
The Traffic Division is dedicated to ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation within Walnut Creek. The small team designs and implements traffic calming measures, conducts outreach events around projects and general traffic safety, optimizes traffic signal timing, reviews traffic studies, enhances active transportation infrastructure, and improves citywide signing and striping to ensure the safe movement of all users. Additionally, the division uses Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to reduce traffic delays and improve roadway network operations.
About the Position
The City of Walnut Creek is seeking a collaborative, team-oriented individual to join its Traffic Engineering Division. Much of the work will be completed in an office environment, with occasional in-field visits.
The Assistant Traffic Engineer position performs varied professional traffic / transportation and civil engineering work in the design, construction, inspection, and coordination of a variety of public works projects; reviews, performs and / or oversees work, studies, and plans related to traffic safety, traffic operations, traffic infrastructure, development, intelligent transportation systems, transportation planning, and curb management.
In addition to the activities outlined for the Assistant Traffic Engineer, the Associate Traffic Engineer takes on more complex professional engineering work and serves as a project manager for traffic engineering projects. Work is performed with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment within established policies and professional standards and includes the direction of technical and professional staff.

Assistant Traffic Engineer
Education
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in civil engineering, traffic engineering, transportation engineering, or a related field, or possession of an Engineer-in-Training Certificate (EIT).
Experience
A minimum of two (2) years' experience in sub-professional or professional civil or traffic engineering work including engineering design, plan checking, surveying, and / or some construction experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver's License and a good driving record.
Possession of an Engineering-in-Training Certificate is desirable.
Associate Traffic Engineer
Education
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in civil engineering, traffic engineering, transportation engineering, or a related field.
Experience
A minimum of three (3) years' progressively responsible experience in civil or traffic engineering work including project design and plan checking, and some supervisory and project management experience.
Special Requirements
Current registration as a Professional Traffic or Civil Engineer in the State of California.
Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C
California Driver's License and a good driving record.
