Incumbent serves as Laboratory Analyst for the City of Warsaw Wastewater Utility, responsible for performing a variety of tests involving chemical, physical, and bacteriological analysis of wastewater and byproducts of the wastewater treatment process and recording and compiling related data.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Collects at various sites, tests and analyzes daily samples of discharge at all phases of treatment according to Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements, checking pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen levels. Prepares documents needed for the collection and transport of samples collected including required documentation for compliance. Sets up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for regulatory compliance monitoring, research, or process control. Calibrates instruments and performs tests on raw and/or final effluent, such as CBOD, fecal coliform and total residual chlorine, ammonia, suspended and volatile solids and totals. Performs tests and interprets results of chemical, biological, and physical analysis of samples collected from sewage treatment plant processes and records findings. Maintains laboratory equipment and facilities in a clean and sterile condition; prepares and standardizes all solutions used in analysis; maintains records of work performed; maintains inventories of supplies, materials and chemicals. Prepares standard solutions and reagents; cleans laboratory tools and equipment; troubleshoots malfunctions and maintains laboratory equipment and instrumentation; assists in the development and review of laboratory procedures. Serves on 24-hour call for emergencies. Performs other duties as required.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Incumbent performs duties in a standard laboratory environment, and at various sites in the department, involving sitting and walking at will, hearing sounds/communication, handling/grasping/fingering objects, close vision, speaking clearly, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials, toxic chemicals, fumes, and extreme temperatures.
Safety precautions must be followed to protect self and others from injury. Incumbent reports directly to the Utility
Manager.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSE NEEDED: High school diploma or GED, with previous education and/or experience in chemistry and sampling techniques. One year of work experience in a wastewater laboratory desirable. Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of IDEM and EPA wastewater treatment regulations and standard laboratory procedures. Working knowledge of universal health precautions and bloodborne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge on the job to protect oneself from infection. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction and present findings in oral or written form. Ability to properly operate, and calibrate as appropriate, various laboratory sampling/testing equipment, including microscopes, drying oven, expandable ion-analyzer, scales, autoclave, incubators, chlorine and dissolved oxygen meters. Ability to compute and calculate results of tests, and read and interpret specifications, technical manuals, instruments, gauges and dials. Ability to accurately prepare documents and maintain detailed manual and computer records as required. Ability to work alone with minimum supervision or with others in a team environment. Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to department and city policy. Ability to maintain personal composure and tact during difficult situations. Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, and apply OSHA safety regulations applicable to work performed, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct. Possession of a valid Indiana Driver’s License and demonstrated safe driving record.
