The Engineering Intern assists the Engineering Department with construction staking, construction observation, records management, Geographical Information System (GIS) data and base mapping, project development, and other Engineering Department functions.  This position is intended for a current college student majoring in Civil Engineering, GIS, or another related field.


JOB DUTIES OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist the Engineering Department with performing survey work, construction observation, documentation of construction activities and quantity tracking on public improvement projects, and provide other services as required in serving as a liaison between contractors and the City Engineer.
  • Assist with creating, maintaining, and updating the City’s GIS data and base mapping system for City-wide infrastructure and land management.  Collect field measurements, conditions, and other infrastructure information to be incorporated into the City database and mapping system.  Assist in the production and review of as-built drawings.
  • Assist in the preparation of construction plans by researching field notes and GIS information, developing survey and legal description information, creating layouts, drawing preliminary plans, calculating quantities, and estimating costs.
  • Assist in the inspection of ongoing and completed construction work, assure that work is performed according to specifications, details, and City requirements, run tests on soil and concrete samples, and assist with lamp and pressure tests on sewers and related public works utilities.
  • Assist in traffic surveys and study reports.
  • Assist in providing information and service to the public. 
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned by the Senior Engineering Technician.


This position may encounter not public data in the course of these duties.  Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to perform the duties.  While data are being accessed, this position should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason.  Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, this position must properly store the not public data.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.  The list below is representative of the formal education, experience, and training required.

Education

Current enrollment in a college or technical school pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or other related field.

Experience

Familiar with AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS computer software programs.


Trainings, Certificates, and Licenses

Possess a valid MnDOT Minnesota Class D Driver’s License


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Completion of at least two years of college or at least one year of technical school. 

Experience

Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS computer software programs.

Familiar with municipal infrastructure and facilities.

Experience working with construction drawings and survey documents.

COMPLEXITY

The overall complexity of this position is moderately high.  While performing the normal duties of this job, the processes, procedures, and software may vary from one assignment to the next.  Assignments are still related in function and objective.


RESPONSIBILITY

Supervision

Limited supervision is provided while performing the normal duties of this job.   This position exhibits no formal supervisory responsibilities but may be required to coordinate work with other individuals as a member of team.

Impact

While performing the normal duties of this job, this position’s work affects the overall efficiency and image of the City.

Hazards

While performing the duties of this job, this position may occasionally climb steps, balance, squat, crawl, reach above shoulder level, run, push/pull 10 to 50 lbs., carry 10 to 50 lbs., and smell.  This position will frequently bend/stoop, kneel, crouch, feel, perform repetitive motions, drive, and continuously sit, stand, walk, finger/enter data/keystroke, talk, and hear.


While performing the duties of this job, this position will use close vision, far vision, depth perception, visual acuteness, color vision, and peripheral vision.


While performing the duties of this job, this position will use both the right and left hands for repetitive movements, simple handling or grasping, firm handling or manipulation, and fine handling or manipulation.


Surroundings

While performing the duties of this job, this position will experience exposure to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, exposure to noise, dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, or oils requiring special mitigating precautions or protective gear, working in narrow aisles or passageways, work around moving mechanical parts, exposure toextreme heat and cold, and defending from bodily harm.
