What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Leader position at City of Watauga?
Works under the direct supervision of the Summer Camp Coordinator, instructing a class of youth (ages 5-12) in recreational activities.
- Instructs Summer Camp Programs and activities as directed by the Summer Camp Coordinator.
- Supervise assigned age groups. Campers are 5-12 years of age.
- Exercises leadership techniques and skills with group members.
- Plans and implements organized methods of arts and crafts, recreation, and athletic games.
- Responsible for the safety of each participant in the assigned group.
- Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of this position.
- Performs all daily minor maintenance during the program, including cleaning up, setting up, and breaking down equipment and facilities.
- Maintains equipment and supplies for the Summer Camp Program.
- Communicates verbally regularly with participants, parents, and the public.
- Report urgent situations needing immediate attention to the Summer Recreation Coordinator.
- Assist other recreation employees/instructors as needed.
- May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.

High school graduate or GED. Some college preferred. Minimum three (3) years of verifiable experience in leading activities for the public in a camp, school, or recreational program. Experience must have been obtained at a school or center for school-aged children and/or young adults.Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License. Current First Aid training and CPR certifications required (training is part of orientation if selected for position).
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is often required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to operate assigned equipment and vehicles and adhere to all safety guidelines. Possible exposure to irate citizens.
- Knowledge of basic first aid and ability to observe necessary precautions to secure the safety of recreation participants and be able to render first aid in the case of minor injury is required.
- Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, local laws, codes, and regulations for childcare and recreation.
- Ability to work tactfully with children of all ages.
- Ability to work alternate schedules as assigned.
- Ability to exercise discretion and judgment when dealing with confidential Information.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks with effective customer relations.
- Ability to determine the urgency of situations needing attention, intervene appropriately, and notify the Summer Camp Coordinator or appropriate personnel.
- Ability to communicate with a diverse group including, but not limited to, employees, managerial staff, public officials, children, and the general public while providing excellent customer service.
- Ability to interact well with fellow employees, participants, and parents/guardians is required.
- Skills in typing and compiling reports, as well as knowledge of Microsoft programs, are preferred.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in providing exceptional customer service in person, by email, and by telephone.
