Key Learning Opportunities & Job Functions:
During this internship, the Network Administrator Intern will take advantage of mentoring opportunities provided by senior network engineers and IT staff, while gaining hands on experience in various aspects of network engineering, including:
Technical Support:
- Providing first level technical support for end users, assisting with hardware and software issues.
- Troubleshooting and resolving problems with PCs, laptops, printers, and other peripheral devices.
- Install, configure, and update operating systems and software applications.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of computer hardware, including desktops, laptops, and monitors.
- Perform routine software updates, patches, and upgrades to ensure systems are up to date.
- Help manage inventory of IT equipment, including tracking assets and updating records.
- Assist in the set-up and configuration of new PCs and laptops for employees.
- Install and configure software applications based on user requirements.
- Ensure all systems are configured according to company policies and security standards.
- Assist in the day-to-day management and troubleshooting of the City’s network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, and wireless networks.
- Monitor network performance and ensure the availability of network resources.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of network security measures, including firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
- Collaborate with network engineers in the design and implementation of network solutions to meet business requirements.
- Participate in network upgrade projects, including the installation of new hardware and software.
- Assist in the deployment of network devices such as routers, switches, access points, and other networking equipment.
- Maintain accurate documentation of network configurations, changes, and incidents.
- Contribute to the development of network diagrams, schematics, and other technical documentation.
- Assist in the audit of network security measures to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Gain hands on experience with monitoring and responding to security alerts, working with the IT security team to resolve potential threats.
- Assist in identifying and resolving network issues, including connectivity problems, hardware failures, and configuration errors.
- Collaborate with other IT teams to address cross functional issues affecting network performance.
- Provide support for end users experiencing network related issues, ensuring timely resolution.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and routing protocols.
- Familiarity with networking hardware such as routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
