Summary
Performs maintenance and construction duties for the City’s water system; lays, repairs, installs water distribution and treatment infrastructure including pumps, valves, motors, and water meters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs Iowa One-Call locates for underground water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer infrastructure.
- Cooperates and coordinates with excavation contractors; notifies resident(s)/customers of water shut-off; inspects construction/maintenance of projects and documents progress.
- Follows valve turning program which may require replacement of valve packing or entire valve; ensures that valve operates properly including raising valve box; measures and notes valve location and records number of turns.
- Maintains inventory records of water meters, lab supplies, chlorine and other chemicals.
- Performs maintenance on hydrants, valves and mains; organizes materials needed to maintain hydrants, valves, and mains.
- Flushes fire hydrants and releases air after main line installation or repair.
- Maintains job-related logs, records, reports to document completed work, findings and inventory: changes appropriate layers on GIS.
- Operates heavy motorized equipment including but not limited to: front-end loader, two-ton truck, backhoe, mini-excavator, sewer jet machine, and snow removal equipment for maintaining City property and infrastructure.
- Excavates trenches; constructs, maintains and repairs water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems; operates locator, jack hammer, shovels and wrenches to fix and maintain infrastructure.
- Performs routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and services equipment including greasing, washing, and waxing.
- Assists Street Division with snow removal and Sewer Line Maintenance Division with sewer projects.
- Participates in an on-call rotation, performs duties associated, including but not limited to water leaks and sewer back-ups.
- Other duties as assigned.
