Under general supervision, supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of employees responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in the city cemetery. Ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; and to performs the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :

Incumbent exercises direct supervision over lower level staff; reports to the Senior Director of Parks and Recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of subordinate employees responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in a variety of city service areas including parks, recreation facilities, swimming pool and cemetery.
  • Establish schedules and methods for providing maintenance services year-round and seasonal; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Plan direct and participate in all aspects of work assigned to lower level employees including mowing, planting, pruning, edging, watering, fertilizing and overall renovations and maintenance of city grounds, pool, playgrounds and buildings.
  • Perform and / or oversee general maintenance duties on irrigation systems and plumbing equipment; repair and / or replace sprinkler heads and other necessary irrigation system equipment; dig-up and replace piping systems as necessary.
  • Train assigned employees in their areas of work including proper and safe work methods, procedures and techniques relative to assigned area of operation.
  • Participate in the selection of maintenance employees; provide or coordinate employee training; work with subordinate employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
  • Supervise the use, care and operation of maintenance equipment including trucks, tractors, backhoes, loader, mowers, tillers, chain saws, air compressors, line trimmers, utility carts, tools and other equipment relative to assigned area or responsibility.
  • Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; set-up and maintain safe work zones; place signs, cones, lights and other necessary equipment to mark work areas; direct traffic and people as needed.
  • Locate and sell cemetery plots, inspecting grave openings and updating and maintaining burial records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education, Training and Experience :

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and / or HS diploma or GED; prefer college degree in related field. Five (5) years of construction or general grounds and facilities maintenance experience including two (2) year of administrative or lead supervisory responsibility.

License and Certificates :

When driving is a requirement of the classification : A valid State driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Prefer pool or spa operator license issued by State of Texas.

    Physical Demands

    Maintain physical condition to perform essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Manual dexterity to needed to operate motor vehicles. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds unaided.

    Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

    Work Environment

    Travel from site to site; field environment; exposure to inclement weather conditions; noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases; work around heavy construction equipment.

    Insurance : HEALTH

    100% of premium paid for by the City for the Employee Only High Deductible Health Plan. Other health plan options are available for additional premiums. Dependent coverage is available at the expense of the employee.

    DENTAL

    Employee premiums are paid at 100% by the City. Dependent coverage is available at the expense of the employee.

    VISION

    Coverage is offered at the expense of the employee.

    LIFE

    The City provides each employee with a life insurance policy of $25,000. Additional coverage may be purchased at the expense of the employee.

    VOYA

    Employees may elect to be covered under various supplemental policies at their own expense.

    Retirement :

    TEXAS MUNICIPAL RETIREMENT SYSTEM

    Employees participate in a statewide retirement program at 7% mandatory contribution with the city match of 2 : 1. The program requires five (5) years to become vested, with 20 years retirement at any age. For more information contact TMRS at

    The City offers a 457 Plan and a Roth IRA option through Empower Retirement. The City offers payroll deductions and the employee chooses the amount of investment and investment choices.

    All full-time employees accrue 3.08 hours per pay period, based on longevity.

    SICK LEAVE

    All full-time employees accrue one workday per month.
