JOB TITLE: Cemetery Maintenance Worker
DEPARTMENT: Public Works, City of Waycross
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing a variety of grounds maintenance duties in the city cemeteries.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Mows grass in the cemeteries with push and riding mowers.
- Edges and trims grass as needed.
- Maintains sprinkler system and repairs leaks.
- Prepares flowerbeds for planting; plants flowers, plants, and trees.
- Trims trees, shrubs, and bushes.
- Fertilizes trees and flowerbeds.
- Sets markers at new graves.
- Canvasses cemeteries on a weekly basis; removes dead flowers and picks up litter and debris.
- Performs routine maintenance; cleans and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment.
- Rakes leaves and picks up trash, garbage, leaves and limbs from the cemeteries.
- May operate a front-end loader, backhoe, forklift, dump truck, and bucket truck.
- Opens and closes graves using a pick and shovel.
- Performs housekeeping duties at office.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques.
- Knowledge of specifications for opening and closing graves as required by law and local ordinances.
- Knowledge of basic plumbing practices.
- Knowledge of pesticide, fertilizer, and poison-mixing techniques as related to grounds maintenance.
- Knowledge of horticulture.
- Knowledge of the layout of the city cemeteries.
- Skill in operating and maintaining push and riding mowers, tractors, trucks, line trimmers, chain saws, and various hand and power tools.
- Skill in operating a tractor and bush hog.
- Skill in performing routine maintenance on lawn maintenance equipment.
- Skill in operating a truck.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Cemetery Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and upon completion for accuracy, compliance with procedures, and the nature and propriety of results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include legal specifications for opening and closing graves, city and department policies and procedures, and instructions from the supervisor. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related cemetery maintenance duties.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform cemetery maintenance duties. Successful performance in this position ensures that the city cemeteries are attractively maintained and that graves are opened and closed in compliance with legal requirements.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
