POSITION SUMMARY

This position performs skilled mechanical work in maintenance and repair of vehicles, heavy equipment, snow equipment, and mechanical equipment. This lead position ensures effective and efficient operations under the general direction of the Street Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Schedules daily work assignments and reprioritizes assignments as needed to ensure timely completion of work. Prepares documents to record daily work activities.

2. Performs inspections on equipment to ensure proper working condition.

3. Ensures proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment is completed; coordinates maintenance as needed.

4. Notifies Supervisor of servicing required by outside vendor.

5. Performs preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs and services equipment.

6. Performs preventative maintenance, repairs and services tools and equipment including, but not limited to, mowers, jack hammers, saws, and power tools.

7. Diagnoses and repairs engines and systems, including but not limited to electrical systems, hydraulic systems, steering and suspension systems, air, and brake systems.

8. Performs bodywork on vehicles and equipment.

9. Repairs equipment using cutting torch, electric welder, and gas welder as required.

10. Changes tires on equipment; repairs damaged/deflated tires as necessary.

11. Maintain records of work orders, labor, and materials used on each job.

12. Maintains cleanliness of shop and working order of shop equipment.

13. Schedules and performs minor repairs to fuel and lubricant handling equipment; researches and keeps informed on oil ratings and new engine lubricant requirements.

14. Communicates with vendors for parts and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.

15. Operates communications equipment between shop and field personnel to communicate and relay information as necessary; receives telephone and radio calls, determines nature of incident or emergency, and notifies appropriate authorities; communicates and relays information to supervisors and field crews.

16. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed.

17. Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all City safety regulations; assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment; ensures equipment is safely operated and driving laws are obeyed; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.

18. Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting, investigating, and follow-up of equipment incidents, or personal injuries.

19. Perform duties of Shop Superintendent when required.

20. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

· One-year certificate/diploma from accredited technical school in mechanical-related program

· Minimum of four (4) years’ work experience in repair and rebuilding of construction equipment and machinery, servicing and repairing of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.

· Class B CDL with air brakes endorsement.

· ASE Certification in Computers in Vehicles

· Previous crew leader or foreman experience preferred.

· Welding/fabrication experience preferred.

Applicants will be required, as a prerequisite to employment, to successfully pass a background check and a physical examination-including a drug screen. The cost of these prerequisites will be paid by the City.

REQUIRED JOB COMPETENCIES

1. Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tool and equipment of the automotive – mechanic trade.

2. Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel driven equipment and of mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy trucks and construction equipment.

3. Knowledge and understanding of hydraulic fluid power systems.

4. Skill in the care and use of hand and machine tools employed in automotive repair work.

5. Skill in locating and repairing defects in automotive equipment.

6. Able to trouble shoot problems for proper and cost-effective repairs.

7. Records maintenance expenditures.

8. Knowledge of traffic safety principles.

9. Ability to locate specific addresses.

10. Knowledge of safe operations of heavy-duty trucks and equipment.

11. Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance procedures.

12. Ability and skill to drive and operate mobile equipment in a safe and proper manner.

13. Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery.

14. Knowledge of construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize all Personal Protective Equipment necessary.

15. Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.

16. Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers and utilities.

17. Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.

18. Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment.

19. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

20. Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.

21. Ability to understand and effectively carry out local policies and procedur

22. es; written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations.

23. Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.

24. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports consistent with the position.

25. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively in English with staff, administration, and the public in both written and verbal form.

26. Ability to define problems, exercise sound judgment, and address a variety of situations.

27. Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.

31. Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.

32. Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and ability to work flexible hours to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays due to adverse weather conditions, construction projects, or other emergency service.

· This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 75 pounds of force; requires strenuous manual labor including, but not limited to digging, shoveling, sweeping, raking, hauling, crawling, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, and climbing.

· Work performed may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting for long periods with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

· Work has standard vision requirements.

· Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

· Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

· Duties are performed daily both indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions and include exposure to inclement weather, noise, heavy traffic conditions, exhaust fumes, and pesticide.

Pay: $53,990.22 - $75,590.87 per year
