Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Director of Parks & Recreation, assists in the management, planning, organizing, and directing the work of the administrative and field operations groups within the Parks & Recreation Department. The Assistant Director delegates considerable authority for the performance of technical and day-to-day administrative activities to subordinate division supervisors in Parks & Building Maintenance. In the absence of the Department Director, this position may assume the duties of the department director when assigned.
Essential Job Functions

- Assists with overseeing, developing, and implementation strategic

- Assists in planning, directing, and coordinating, through subordinate-level staff, department work plans.
- Assigns projects, evaluates, and identifies opportunities for improvements and makes recommendations to the Director.
- Monitors work efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods, processes and procedures and assists in directing the implementation of changes including improvements.
- Selects, motivates, and evaluates department staff; provides or coordinates training and works with employees to correct deficiencies.
- Provides leadership and supervision to department staff, including, hiring, training, and performance management.
- Assists in formulating, issuing, and enforcing departmental rules, regulations, and procedures in accordance with applicable City policies for all department
- Acts to maintain departmental discipline, general conduct of assigned personnel, and termination procedures.
- Collaborate with community groups and organizations to identify and address park issues and concerns.
- Assists in the coordination, preparation, and presentation of the annual departmental budget by estimating funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Assists in directing the monitoring and approval of expenditures; and directs the preparation and implementation of budgetary adjustments as necessary.

- Assists with the supervision and coordination of appropriate required reports to various reporting agencies.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies related to the department.

- Assists with the supervision and coordination of monthly reports to the city manager regarding the departmental activities and prepares a variety of other reports as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Science, Kinesiology, Public Administration or related field preferred; and three (3) to five (5) years of related work experience to perform such job.
- Applicant must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen at City's expense.
- Applicant must have current valid Class "C" Driver's License and be
- Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within first three months of hire date.
- Bilingual English/Spanish

- Knowledge of budget projection, development, management and justification practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware, and

Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Work is performed in office setting with prolonged periods of working at a computer workstation.
- Considerable time spend outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions on City streets, rights-of-way, close proximity to roadway traffic, noxious fumes, heavy equipment and occasionally in confined spaces.
- Some travel to professional meetings is expected and occasional visits to active construction sites.
- Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hardhats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.).
